NYT: "Kerry Adviser Steps Aside Over Documents" (Gray Lady does a front page Berger Burn)
New York Times ^ | July 20, 2004 | New York Times

WASHINGTON, July 20 — A former national security adviser, Samuel R. Berger, quit his role as informal adviser to the presidential campaign of Senator John Kerry today amid a clamor over his improper handling of classified documents.

"Mr. Berger does not want any issue surrounding the 9/11 commission to be used for partisan purposes," Lanny Breuer, Mr. Berger's attorney, told The Associated Press late this afternoon. "With that in mind he has decided to step aside as an informal adviser to the Kerry campaign until this matter is resolved."

The decision to step aside came after a day in which Republicans zeroed in on the disclosure that Mr. Berger, who was President Bill Clinton's national security adviser, removed classified documents from the National Archives last year. Some Republicans wondered aloud today whether Mr. Berger had used the papers to help Senator Kerry, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee.

Mr. Berger's mishandling of the documents, which were related to terrorism and which he took from the National Archives in preparation for his testimony before the 9/11 commission, seemed today to become a bigger problem for the Kerry campaign almost by the hour — and at the worst possible time, as Mr. Kerry is hoping to gain a big lift by next week's Democratic National Convention in Boston.

Incontrovertable proof of the Clinton connection.

I don't know what is worse, the rat thieving practices of the dems or the pathetic girlie-man responses by the Republicans. Sickening...

Hiding the papers in your clothes rather than carry them out in plain sight is EVIDENCE of the FORE-KNOWLEDGE of WRONGDOING.

"Inadvertantly" is reduced, therefore to a lie.

improper handling of classified documents.

Tuesday's NYT story began by saying Berger had "inadvertantly" taken the documents. This is a slight modification, but they have turned up the heat a bit - a sure indication this story is not going to disappear anytime soon.

WARNING LABEL

This endorsement for Sen. Kerry from the New York Times was composed and cleared by
the New York Times' Editorial Staff's Emma Gilbey
(past flame of Kerry, but of insufficient wealth
for any possibility of a long term Kerry relationship)
and Bill Keller (now Mr. Gibley himself).

Just exactly how does an informal advisor step aside? What does that mean? I'm serious. I have no idea what that statement means objectively and think it might, actually, mean nothing.

Look at the bias: theft of classified documents is called "improper handling."

This must be grating on them very badly.

The Republicans are playing this exactly the way they should.

A "foaming at the mouth" response is exactly what the Dems and the media want, so they can paint this as a partisan set-up.

I don't believe this could have appeared in the NYT without the Clinton's permission.

the incident with the documents was inadvertent

The Slimes is spinning this too. It was not a single incident, it was multiple incidents.

It was not inadvertant. Inadvertant is suddenly discovering that you closed a document in to your briefcase or portfolio--and then immediately returning it.

Berger took pains to hide what he was taking and did so multiple times. And he did not voluntarily return what ever it was he took, he only returned it under duress (a phone call).

It is the frequency and efforts at concealment that make this scream criminal intent.

Hoo boy, the Slimes sure got caught with its pants down on this one. Thought they had stuffed this one in the closet woith their Page A17 burial this morning. Now they are vainly trying to get5 in front of the parade. How amusing the Times has become....the proverbial Emperor With No Clothes.

"Mr. Berger does not want any issue surrounding the 9/11 commission to be used for partisan purposes," Lanny Breuer, Mr. Berger's attorney...

Why, thank you for your consideration, Mr. Berger.

Now, stop obfuscating and tell everyone what you really did, why you did it, who you did it for and so on, and so on, and so on....

Wonder how much silver it takes to sell out one's country.

I am still trying to figure out how old Sandy the Burglar would have gotten those documents out if he had meant to do it.
