WASHINGTON — Former President Clinton's national security adviser is under criminal investigation for taking highly classified terrorism documents that should have been turned over to the independent commission probing the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks, FOX News has confirmed. Sandy Berger (search) is under scrutiny by the Justice Department (search) following the disappearance of documents he was reviewing at the National Archives.

He hid the documents in his socks. Geeezzzz, this was not mistaken. "Berger and his lawyer said Monday night he knowingly removed the handwritten notes by placing them in his jacket, pants and socks, and also inadvertently took copies of actual classified documents in a leather portfolio."

This has been posted before with fewer exclamation points. And formatting is our friend. Sorry. Need more coffee.

I have the same problem. Every night when I get home I have to clean out my socks, they're full of faxes, memos, notes, drawings etc. Really irritating.

Berger's treating classified documents like he treated appetizers at a Georgetown party.

Isn't The Bergermeister sort of vertically challenged? Maybe Sandra needed the documents to create lifts within his shoes.

Yeah, that's the ticket.

Notice it has already been announced,"The decisions of the 9-11 commission are not effected by this MINOR incident, they are FINAL". How can they be final when based upon TAINTED EVIDENCE ?????????????????????????????????

And why do I get that sinking, frustrated feeling that after a short period of hand-wringing and focus, the Republicans will let this one slip away, Berger will receive the typical slap on the wrist condemnation, and no one will follow up on the 'whats, whys, and wheres'. And they'll get away with another travesty, again.

Sen. Joe Lieberman, D-Conn., called the news "surprising" and said that "unless we learn otherwise, I have to assume that what Sandy said was right -- that any removal of documents was inadvertent. But it is serious."

Joe, I thought you were the conscience of the Senate.

Joe must be trying to get back in the good graces of the Dems.

THis is the strangest thing because all of the classified docs were copies. Why would somebody take copies?

Sandy learned all he knows from der Shliekmeister. Wonder if anything he took ended up in the hands of the Red Chinese ?

OK, I've read he put documents his pocket, down his pants and now in his socks... getting this kind of detail incorrect is a perfect opening for the dark side to say, "see the vast right wing conspiracy jumped the gun on the details and blew something out of proportion." Are we being set up here?

Gergen said he thought that "it is suspicious" that word of the investigation of Berger would emerge just as the Sept. 11 commission is about to release its report

How can it be "suspicious"? Berger himself is the one who came forward.

Why would somebody take copies?

Because he was too stupid to realize they were copies?
