.I just cannot fathom how under this Homeland Security initiative gray haired folks in airports are sometimes subject to intense scrutiny yet for all intents lack of protection along the border allows all sorts of murderers, rapists, drug dealers, diseased and possible terrorists to enter almost at will.

Most pols are afraid to touch the issue. Either round them up & ship them home as most seem to want to do on this thread or do something akin to the Bush plan which is what I have come to think is the best action. The do-nothing approach is a disaster waiting to happen.

Just ranting a bit. We're the "good guys" and can't stoop to violent means.

A few monthe ago Fitz related a story about a citizen of Mexican descent watching invaders climbing over a barrier and fleeing from pursuing Border Patrol agents. This guy said we were extremely stupid for not shooting them because not doing so is effectively an invitation. That's from a former Mexican.

Why would you be in favor of any plan that will effectively add more people to the welfare rolls, resulting in even more taxes and give business increased incentive to downsize their American workforce in favor of hiring illegals.....this is an open invitation to businesses to EVADE to break federal law and EVADE even more payroll taxes. That's the problem with these useful idiot politicians.....they paint issues like this with broad strokes and playing on emotion yet they never get around to informing the taxpayers about all the dirty little secrets associated with their "immigration reform" plans.

First, it's a plan i.e. not a pipe-dream or pretending a huge problem doesn't exist. Now, why do you think it will disadvante U.S. workers or increase welfae rolls?

I guess you don't live in Tx. or Calif. otherwise you would see that many of the former good paying construction/road crew jobs are now largely filled by Hispanics, many of whom are illegal and I know that for a fact because a customer of mine is in that business. Obviously, many builders are still able to get top price for the houses they build while their cost of labor has gone done substantially because they've replaced a lot of their American workers with illegal labor.

This way, they get to EVADE a whole bunch of payroll taxes while paying minimal wages to their workers, knowing full well the taxpayers will be forced to help support the worker's living, medical, education, etc. expenses........pretty neat deal for them isn't it? This is happening all over the country at the moment and gaining momentum as more illegals flood in all the time. The last estimate I've seen is that over $50 BILLION in "services" are being delivered to people who have broken federal law by entering this country illegally. Now, anyone who sees no problem with this can rest assured it will only get worse until the USA resembles some S. American banana republic as for me, I'll continue to fight to preserve our CONSTITUTIONAL REPUBLIC.

I know. I understand that. The plan is supposed to change that. The idea is that businesses couldn't get away with doing that with registered workers here legally.

I understand what you're saying but realisticly how many businesses are going to come forward and claim workers so that they can pay these payroll taxes, which will cost them countless $ they do not currently have to pay? I just don't see any way there can be adequate enforcement of such an initiative and I'd be amazed that anyone would come forward to acknowledge they've been breaking federal tax laws all along.

They won't. The idea is to provide an incentive to Mexicans who want to work here to do it legally. This means they would have recourse to complain about not getting SS or min. wage or others rights granted domestic workers. This means business will no longer have a co-conspirator in crime which would force a lot of them to pay taxes. And of course this should make American workers more competitive w/Mexicans.

Of course, the whole idea can be miserable failure but even if it is I can't see how the situation could get worse.

We'll have to see what happens but again, I have hard time believing many illegals will change the way they're living at the moment.....get paid in cash (no taxes), free health care, housing and food assistance, use fraudulent ID's to collect extra benefits, retail establishments going more and more to dual language packaging so they don't have to learn English, etc. and the beat goes on.....Bush is dreaming if he thinks he's going to change the status quo.
