American Evita

Hillary Clinton's Path to Power

by Christopher Andersen

"I don't quit. I keep going." –Hillary Rodham Clinton

She is, quite simply, the most famous, most complex, most loved/hated/admired/reviled woman -- perhaps person -- in America. And, whether she fulfills her life's ambition or not, she can already lay claim to being the first woman ever considered a serious contender for the presidency.

From the beginning, there have been the inevitable comparisons to Argentina's legendary Eva Perón. Sex, power, money, lies, scandal, tragedy, and betrayal were the things that defined the lives of both women. Yet most of what we know about Hillary Rodham Clinton is seen in the context of her tumultuous marriage to the 42nd President. Now a power in the Senate, Hillary waits for the right moment to make her own run for the White House.

In the style of his #l New York Times bestsellers The Day Diana Died and The Day John Died, as well as Jack and Jackie, Jackie After Jack, George and Laura and Sweet Caroline, Christopher Andersen draws on important sources -- many speaking here for the first time -- to paint a startling portrait of America's most controversial woman. Among the revelations:

How U.S. history has been shaped -- and will continue to be shaped -- by the arrangement between Hillary and Bill known as "The Plan."

Important new details about the role Hillary played in the scandalous eleventh hour pardons of armed radicals, drug dealers, tax cheats, embezzlers, money launderers and more.

How the outgoing First Lady registered like a bride at a gift store and left the White House with $400,000 worth of "gifts" belonging to the American people.

How JFK Jr. almost thwarted her Senate plans.

New details about Hillary's relationship with Vince Foster.

How Hillary has coped with Bill's hundreds of affairs, and the new women in her husband's life.

What Martha Stewart did for Hillary, and how Hillary repaid her.

How Hillary is using the 2004 elections as a springboard to her own future presidential candidacy—regardless of who wins.

Whatever the ultimate judgment of history, the ongoing saga of Hillary Clinton's inexorable rise to power continues to stir passions, and to make her the American Evita.

Hell hath no fury like Hillary Clinton's swears!
New York | July 07, 2004 2:16:17 PM IST

She might paint the picture of being a hard-working senator but if Christopher Andersen, the author of her biography "American Evita," is to be believed she uses expletives as normally as making conversation.

According to The New York Post, one of Andersen's sources said that when Hillary was running late on the day of Bill Clinton's inauguration, she sat into the car next to him and said, "You stupid motherf- - -er!" in response to her husband's unparliamentary utterances.

"She talks in a way that I think would make Howard Stern blush," Andersen said. He also added that when Bill told her about his affair with Monica Lewinsky, her reaction was, "You stupid, stupid, stupid b-----d!" and she slapped her husband across the face. (ANI)

Andersen, whose best sellers include "The Day John Died," "The Day Diana Died" and "Bill and Hillary: The Marriage," spoke to hundreds of people in Arkansas, Washington and New York to get his latest biography out before the Democratic convention.

Neither Hillary nor Bill Clinton cooperated on the project.

That's no surprise, since the portrait Andersen paints of the former first lady — and, he suggests, presidential wannabe — is not pretty.

He says the Clintons absolutely do not want John Kerry to win the upcoming presidential election, because it will hurt Hillary's chances in 2008.

Andersen says Hillary will do anything to further The Plan, which was first to make her husband president, and now to get there herself.

"Anyone who gets in the way gets attacked and humiliated," Andersen says.

EXCERPT FROM "UNLIMITED ACCESS" - discussion with a friend named Karen who had worked in President Bush's Visitor's Office

"Thanks, Gary. But I'm calling for another reason. I want to know what the heck is going on with Hillary Clinton."

I wasn't sure what she meant.

"I have a friend up here who just returned from a conference at the White House, and if what she tells me is true, Hillary must really be wacky!"

"Like what?"

"Well, three health insurance company executives hired my lobbyist friend to go with them to the White House to present their solution for the health care crisis. They wanted personally to present their case to the task force, hopefully directly to Hillary. They got their chance. They were able to get an appointment with the first lady. They went down there in a group, were brought into the West Wing, and were told to wait in the Roosevelt Room. They had sent advance copies of their plan, and they were looking forward to speaking to Hillary about it."

"How did your friend get caught up in this?"

"Well, she's the sister of a classmate of Hillary, and it was thought that if a call was made. . . . You know the rest, right?"

"Yeah. So tell me, what happened?"

"They were kept waiting an hour. Then Hillary walked in, slammed their proposal on the table, and said, 'Gentlemen, I have looked at your proposal, and it's pure bulls--it! Now, you've had our meeting! Get out!' So my friend, who was really humiliated and very angry, got up from her chair, looked Hillary square in the eye and said, 'Mrs. Clinton, my sister warned me that I would be sorry that I ever asked her to set this up, because she said you were a real bitch. She was wrong! You're a f--king bitch!' So, with that, they all got up and walked right out of the White House. Gary, could this really be true? Is Hillary that screwed up?"

An assortment of anti-Clinton protesters was also on hand, sequestered half a block down the sidewalk.

Kathy Wood of the conservative organization Free Republic said D.C. police immediately informed members of her group that if they denied “egress” to any passers-by, they would be removed from the area.

It's less about love and more about ruthless ambition. It will delight anyone who despises Hillary Rodham Clinton and be dismissed by anyone who admires her. Readers, especially those who study the tabloids, won't learn much.

The book's title is a reference to the infamous Eva Peron, wife of Argentine dictator Juan Peron. The comparison is barely explored, although one of the book's photo captions, of the first lady at a state dinner, calls it "a glamorous Evita-like pose." But will anyone be singing, "Don't cry for me, Arkansas?"

snip

The Plan "required that Hillary hold off on pursuing her political dreams until Bill had realized his," with "the explicit understanding that power would always be shared — regardless of who actually held office."

At times, the book calls the president "Hillary's husband." It treats her as "co-president" and blames her for nearly all of the Clinton administration's failures, including its inability to kill or capture Osama bin Laden.

It deals with Hillary Clinton's election to the Senate from New York in 2000, and assumes she'll run for president in 2008 or 2012. But Andersen is less interested in politics and policy than in his subject's transformation "from fashion frump to sleek urban sophisticate," and her qualities as a mother. He suggests that her interest in Chelsea had a lot to do with softening Hillary's public image.

It's impossible to distinguish the reporting from the rumors in the book. Andersen, for example, writes that during a trip to Washington during the Reagan administration, "Chelsea asked her mother if they could take a tour of the White House.

" 'Absolutely not,' Hillary replied. 'We'll have to wait until someone decent lives there.' "

snip

American Evita appears timed to follow Bill Clinton's best-selling memoir, My Life. There's a lot more sex in Andersen's book, driven by a diagnosis of the former president as a sex addict. But after 18 books, including four about the Kennedys, Andersen could be suffering from his own addiction: writing about celebrities.

There'll little doubt the Clintons will now make sure Kerry-Edwards loses. For Hillary its all or nothing from now on.

I stated it before: America will reject Hillary Clinton if for no other reason than that she is bisexual.

If we get Kerry we will never have to see Hillary in the White House. Now why do I get the feeling her Evitaness will pull out all the stops to make sure he doesn't win?

Eva Peron? Try Arnold Schwarzenegger's nemisis in "The Terminator". Hillary does a damn good job of morphing. Not to mention that Eva Peron was better looking, and people actually liked her.

The thought of her as Prez gives me chills. That being said, however, I really don't think she'd win without an amount of voter fraud that even the Clinton's couldn't pull off. She'd win NY and CA, probably New England. Ohio, Florida, PA, Michigan, Texas, and all of the south--no f&*@in way, she'd get pummeled even if she were running against Charles Manson.
