Midwest Theaters Ban 'Fahrenheit 9/11'

By The Associated Press

July 3, 2004, 2:13 PM CDT

DECORAH, Iowa -- The president of a company that owns movie theaters in Iowa and Nebraska is refusing to show director Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11."

R.L. Fridley, owner of Des Moines-based Fridley Theatres, says the controversial documentary incites terrorism.

Fridley said in an e-mail message to company managers that the company does not "play political propaganda films from either the right or the left."

"Our country is in a war against an enemy who would destroy our way of life, our culture and kill our people," Fridley wrote. "These barbarians have shown through (the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001) and the recent beheadings that they will stop at nothing. I believe this film emboldens them and divides our country even more."

"Fahrenheit 9/11" won best picture at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival and has grossed millions of dollars at the box office. Moore won an Academy Award for an earlier work, "Bowling for Columbine."

Critics accuse the film of being an unfair and inaccurate portrayal about President Bush's policies before and after Sept. 11, 2001. Copyright © 2004, The Associated Press

That was true as of last week. Now he has at least 4 theaters minimum in each state, 227 in California alone. I did a count of them nationwide and it totals up to 1571. Of course they list 36 Kerasotes theaters in the Midwest who aren't showing it ( link at reply #10 ), so their numbers are already suspect. I'll compare the number to next Saturday and see how poplar it really is.

So far in our little town outside Fort Huachuca with 3 theaters it hasn't shown up here either and there has been only one complaint that it's not here.

I like that!

Praise God! Everyone should thank this man for what he has done.

Give the movie more publicity?

How about this idea- give to every person walking in to see the film the list of 56 deciets that was produced by David Kopel and posted here-http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1164856/posts.

Anyone want to make a bet as to whether this movie will set a world record for "shortest time from the theaters to network television" when it makes it's television debut sometime in October or November?

It takes 32 pages to print.

I saw the film last night (a friend downloaded an mpeg rip, I didn't pay!) and I caught way, way more than the 56 in Kopel's paper. I actually watched it with his paper in hand!

Dunderheads at Associated Press apparently don't understand the definition of the word "ban".

It simply COULDN'T be that they would be deliberately misleading.... nahhhh.

Not to be picky but when was the last propaganda film from the right? Is he talking about Frank Capra's "Why We Fight"?

I'm pretty sure there was a film about Waco. It wasn't released to theaters. There might have been another movie about the whole Mena airport thing (Rush mentioned that the other day).

The point is that neither (or any) of THESE movies were ever seen to be at all legitimate, from the average citizen point of view.

More publicity? A person would've had to have lived in a cave the past several months in order to have avoided the overwhelming onslaught of publicity and controversy in regard to Moore's movie.

"I wouldn't worry much about it being shown at a university. If you don't offer beer with the ticket...most kids aren't going in."

Professors will offer extra credit or sometimes require students to view a particular movie. This spring, my college showed Moore's "Bowling for Columbine." The place was packed because three professors either made it mandatory or extra credit. I went voluntarily to debate with the discussion panel after the movie.

I didn't suggest that the film didn't have publicity, but just that it would give the film more publicity.

And I am sure it will.

The people who are going aren't students; they're the usual crowd from 'Nebraskans for Peace', etc.. That doesn't bother me; what bothers me is that my tax dollars are paying for it.

Hey RepublicansWilling to burn the Constitution

Re: Fahrenheit 9/11

Maybe you missed the lessons in history class about
democracy and the rights of free speech. You can't
have one without the other.

Supporting the troops means having a free discussion
and expression of opinions. When it comes to lives an
open debate IS AN ABSOLUTE MUST.

Are you such Republican partisans you are willing to
sacrifice our rights when you really just support the
president and his lame policies. HOW BRAINWASHED ARE YOU?

Look I am sorry the USSR collapsed but thats what
happens in totalitarian societies like the one you
propose. But its not in OUR traditions to support
censorship.

Get out of the US. I am sure Saudi Arabia
or a similar unfree country like Pakistan will take your Anti-democratic politics.
