NY Times: Saddam Trial Should Wait Until After Elections (LOL!)
The New York Times ^ | July 1, 2004 | NYT Editorial Board

Posted on 06/30/2004 10:08:15 PM PDT by Dems_R_Losers

In Saddam Hussein's Iraq, courts counted for nothing, while fear, death and vengeance were the only laws of the land. A new Iraq must be built on more solid foundations: democracy and the rule of law. One of the first challenges will be bringing Saddam Hussein to justice. His trial can be a significant step toward the rule of law — or a detour back to the rule of revenge. He should have a fair trial under an elected government applying the relevant principles of Iraqi and international law.

Mr. Hussein and 11 top associates will be formally charged today with crimes against humanity before a special tribunal established by the American occupation authorities last December and led by Salem Chalabi, a nephew of Ahmad Chalabi. Trying the accused properly will take many months — and not just because the accused need time to prepare a legal defense. These trials are an opportunity to unravel the mysteries and crimes of the Baathist era, including the secret mass graves and the true story of unconventional weapons programs, to determine where criminal responsibility rests in the chain of command.

The actual trials should not begin until an elected government takes power, a step planned for next January. Starting them sooner might produce political dividends for the appointed Iraqi interim government or the Bush re-election campaign. But it would not serve justice or help restore Iraq's standing in the international community.

Saddam's trial will be the perfect antidote to the 9/11 Commission venom. He's nothing but the typical arab bully. He'll sing like a bird. Hey, Saddam, tell me where you hid the WMD. Trade you a bullet for a noose. How about it?

A Left wing acquaintance said to me today, "Saddam should be tried in the US, not in Iraq."

And now the NY Times wants to delay the trial until after the election?

Sorry. No can do. It's OUR turn now! We want to see the mass graves, the torture victims, all in glorious colour on our TV's. And we want to see them BEFORE November.

Squirm, DemocRATS, squirm. You want pictures? You are going to get pictures. You'll WISH it was all as simple as panties on heads and doggy leads.

Ah, but revenge is sweet.

I believe what they are trying to say is that there is no way that can avoid coverage of Saddam's trial, and that any content from the trial would make it obvious how horrible Saddam actually was, and that will make it very hard to spin the "Bush Sucks" message since it was, in effect, only Bush that actually had the guts to stop Saddam, so let's wait to try Saddam until hopefully Kerry is in office.

AltaVista needs to make a translator for changing "'Lie'beral-speak" into "Truth".

Sorry, that boy is going to get whacked. Iraq needs it. And they don't need him around waiting for someone to release him.

So, wad some panties up for his mouth and head (hey it's custom now), pronounce him guilty and inject him.

No loss to the world.

The future of Iraq's judicial system will have nothing to do with Hussein. Their future will be how they handle their citizens who don't have a billion dollars stashed away.

I seem to recall yesterday sovereignity being handed back to Iraq. Did I miss something? Was it handed back to Iraq and the NY times? they should keep their big noses out of this and let Iraq run their own country.

"It is pretty much a given that the trial will be after OUR election."

Amazing, they don't seem to ever worry about when, what, where, how, or how true is anything done by a democrat.

And, America is to schedule the Iraqi's trial to conform with the designated timeline of the democrat party to provide the best possible slant for their political power grab?

Now just how would Saddam's trial help Bush? Afterall, Bush lied to go get Saddam - possibly it would remind the American public that we should never have been there.

Surely in the trial they will bring out the fact that Bush only took us to war to revenge Daddy. Surely all of the oil Bush confiscated for the oil buddies will be brought out in the trial.

This looks like a perfect election tool for the democrats.

It ain't just them, it's a freakin' epidemic...

Brokaw, over video of a flag being folded during an outdoor funeral service and a shot of rows of flag-draped coffins: "I know that you and others like you are grateful for the liberation of Iraq. But can't you understand why many Americans feel that so many young men and women have died here for purposes other than protecting the United States?"

Allawi: "We know that this is an extension to what has happened in New York. And the war have been taken out to Iraq by the same terrorists. Saddam was a potential friend and partner and natural ally of terrorism."

Brokaw pounced: "Prime Minister, I'm surprised that you would make the connection between 9/11 and the war in Iraq. The 9/11 Commission in America says there is no evidence of a 'collaborative relationship' between Saddam Hussein and those terrorists of al-Qaeda."

Allawi: "No. I believe very strongly that Saddam had relations with al-Qaeda. We know Saddam had relationships with a lot of terrorists and international terrorism. Now, whether he is directly connected to the September atrocities or not, I can't vouch for this. But definitely I know he has connections with extremism and terrorists."

Message to New York Slimes: Maybe you should stop your "flood the zone" coverage of the Abu Ghraib "scandal" until January. After all, the results of your coverage might produce political dividends for the Kerry election campaign.

Mediots.
