Bush takes lead in Arizona presidential poll

Arizona is looking a little better these days from the White House view, according to a new poll by Arizona State University.

An ASU poll released Tuesday shows President George W. Bush opening a 12-point lead in the state over Democratic challenger John Kerry.

The result is good news for Republicans who want to a repeat of 2000 when Bush bested Al Gore and the state was colored red on electoral maps.

The ASU poll gives Bush 47 percent versus Kerry's 35 percent. That's a bigger lead for the Republican incumbent than in previous Arizona polls, which put Bush's lead in the single digits.

Bush earned 52 percent approval rating from those polled, That is better than he has fared in some other national polls. Most national polls have Bush and Kerry in a dead heat.

The polls results come on the heels of Arizona Sen. John McCain becoming more active in Republican campaign efforts and ending speculation he might join a bipartisan ticket with Kerry.

Bush has also been helped by a series of strong national and regional job and housing numbers.

McCain recently appeared with Bush in Nevada and Washington state, will speak at the Republican National Convention and will accompany the president on more campaign stops this summer and fall.

Arizona has been considered a battleground state by both parties. Kerry, a Massachusetts senator, was in Phoenix on Tuesday talking up immigration reforms to Hispanics.

In other news, experts are lately advancing a theory that bears live in the woods and the pope regularly does his business in the Vatican.

I agree...

I have been predicting a landslide of monumental proportions ever since the Dems nominated that long faced loser John Kerry. The guy has nothing to offer but criticism, after a while, people just ignore whiners like John Kerry.

By November...... John Kerry will promote Michael Dukakis into "Contender" status by comparison

I don't think it'll be anything like Reagan's re-election r like you mention about Dukakis, but I hope I'm wrong and you're right. It'd be fun to watch the libs squirm. I think it will be no contest, however.

It will not be Dukakis-like, no way. There are just too many lib strongholds in states with big cities. No way W wins NY, Mass, Cal., and most of NE. He should win though.

I agree... but what's funny is when we get goofy polls favorable to Kerry, we usually end up with 200+ message threads...

You all know that Jesse was whispering in Kerry's ear today that all the people in the cemeteries are getting ready to vote for him.

My guess is Bush opened up a big lead in AZ after John F*ckin' proposed an illegal alien amnesty. The costs of illegal aliens is hitting AZ particularly hard. And the Democratic nominee wants to make things worse instead of better in the Grand Canyon State. Go figure.

Reagan's reelection year was against Mondale... George H. Bush beat Dukakis...

Guess his visit didn't go well.

His speech to La Raza is going over like a turd in the punch bowl.

Bush will probably take Phoenix Metro and Tucson (barely), but a lot of the real border dwellers are threatening to leave the top end of their ballots blank. For us it's a case of Kerry or Kerry-Lite. Either way, we get bent over and boned.

Yep, at times, there's just way too much negativity here in FR. More of us need to take it after Reagan, "It's morning in America"

I was in the hospital and caught nothing. Good thing, too!

I want nothing more than for him to be nominated, so that I can have fun with both history and current events.

Gotta make sure his candidacy is in "Jeopardy" after he is named as the democratic candidate on the November ballot.

Keep in mind that anyone else is "second best for the Democratic party" if the whole party waffles.
