Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the man believed to be spearheading the insurgency in Iraq, has not been captured, the US military says.
They earlier said he had been caught as a series of conflicting reports emerged from Iraq.
"It's not true, the reports are not true," said Brigadier General Mark Kimmitt, deputy director of operations for the US military in Iraq.
"We've heard the reports about it, but they are not true."
Zarqawi is America's most wanted man in Iraq.
He is believed to be behind a number of kidnappings and beheadings of Westerners.
Reports suggested he had been captured in the town of Hilla, south of Baghdad.
The area is the responsibility of Polish troops.
The Polish garrison said they would not comment on ongoing operations.
It's possible we have him and the military is denying it so they can round up some other people in the process, or carry out some other kind of operation. Who knows.
Well, it would be a lot easier to just find him dead later in a pile of rubble, rather than to put him on trial and all that.( wink, wink, nudge)
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.......
