5 Muslim anglers arrested for asking directions

Washington: Five Muslim men, one of them a Pakistani, the others from Bangladesh, all anglers, were arrested by the police for no other offence than that they asked directions to a river close to a nuclear power plant at a rest stop on Interstate 80 in Pennsylvania.

I would say no, it seems like an almost impossible task. I heard that some are searched before leaving their home port but anything could happen between there and here.

I would think if they searched (completely) every ship there would be a log jam in every port.

I am guessing that most operate in the same manner which is frightening. We appear to be so vulnurable.

Even the NPP have failed most tests when mock takeover attempts are run.

Here is the Article I posted last night.

Houston tightning up it's ports as part of new Homeland
Security Measures.

Thursday was the first day of stepped-up inspections at U.S. ports, including Houston, which for the past eight years has led the nation in the amount of foreign tonnage.

Under the new guidelines mandated by the Maritime Transportation Security Act of 2002, officials may verify security of ships before the vessels enter ports and deny access to those that are not in compliance.

"Our plans are designed to be comprehensive and continually tested, revised and updated," said Tom Kornegay, the port's executive director.

He said all facilities at the port were in compliance with the new federal law. A security management team at the port spent six months developing a security plan that was submitted to the Coast Guard late last year.

The plan remains under Coast Guard review and has not received certification although port officials said it was expected soon.

"The Coast Guard is confident that the port authority's intense efforts will significantly strengthen security by measures to deter threats and provide a framework for response to a significant safety or security incident," said Capt. Richard M. Kaser, who commands the Coast Guard's Marine Safety Office for Houston and Galveston.

The Coast Guard will board every foreign-flagged vessel that sails without paperwork into the world's sixth-largest seaport, which also is the nation's largest oil port.

Officials are calling the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code, or ISPS, the biggest security crackdown since World War II.

The port, part of the 50-mile-long Houston Ship Channel that connects Houston to the Gulf of Mexico, is home to the busiest container facility on the Gulf Coast, more than 400 petrochemical plants and two of the nation's largest oil refineries. Tankers comprise about half of the 40 vessels coming through Houston on a typical day.

The new security rules in the code require measures in place to screen crews and provide waterside security. Ships and ports must also have security plans, as well as programs to limit access to vulnerable areas.

I've read alot of strange things about Atta. I'm not sure he was the devout Muslim he was purported to be.

Re- ME truckers

Just a thought- when my son finished up getting his CDL recently, he "graduated" along with several Middle Eastern men .

The Middle Easterners all went to work for a certain company. One feature of this company is that the trucker himself/herself "verifies the seal"- (whatever exactly that means) rather than having to have that done by someone else.

Maybe some truckers here can delve into this a bit further? It sounded to me like the company gave more control over the load to the drivers.

Another point- one of the ME students- let's call him "Mohammed"- ran a schoolbus off the road during training- seemed unable to focus on his driving task.

Thanks for checking in. There are a lot of us here breathing again.

Nothing majorly new, AFAIK. I'm still thinking about the "weather" equipment that landed in someone's yard.

Thank you. That sounds like a good plan, but do we really have the resources to pull it off?

Re- stroll

NO Burkas observed ANYWHERE in Center City.
NO ME looking men (I know I'm profiling) hanging out in the cafes.
One ME restaurant had an Open sign, but was locked and dark.

Drivers ALWAYS write the seal number down in their log book, and verify it's integrity. It's actually supposed to be checked at every walkaround, but most drivers BS their log anyway.

As far as bad students, those schools are really no more than "diploma mills".

Very strange. Kinda worrisome. Could just be the holidays though. Here at work it's silent, no one in today (except for me).

I did see quite a few ME types (men and women) in DC yesterday.

There are companies that demand the driver seal every load, no matter what it is. I still have several hundred numbered seals hanging around somewhere. It's really nothing to worry about.

It appears to be business as usual for the MEs here in NYC - all the regulars are at their posts (street carts).
