He's a contrast to the string of Quebec based Prime Ministers who've run Canada for decades. He'll bring a different sensibility to 24 Sussex Drive in Ottawa. First he has to win.
Except for Pierre "Trudeau-mania" Trudeau, Canadians eventually come to dislike their Prime Minister - whoever it is and whatever party they represent. In this way, they are closer to the Brits. Popular and charismatic PM's have been very rare. There is a hope that Stephen Harper might be a breath of fresh air as a possible PM, providing he doesn't blow it between now and next Monday's election. He would also be far better for US-Can relations, although Paul Martin did get along better with Bush than the embarassing Chretien. However Martin is now pandering to the liberal voters of eastern Canada by putting down the US and Bush. With any luck, he and his party will be swept out of power on Monday.
