Gorbachev Blasts US Free Trade Plans in Latin America

The former Soviet leader addressed a speech at the International Gold Symposium in the Peruvian Capital and left a message for Bush: "It is myopic to set national interests so far ahead of world problems".

Former Soviet President, Mikhail Gorbachev, is far from being retired and still has things to say about world-s current events. Last week, he addressed a speech full of criticism on US-led campaign to break down trade barriers, before the International Gold Symposium, at Peruvian Capital, Lima.

According to Gorbachev, the US fueled Free Trade Agreement of the Americas, is "a one-way street" benefiting rich nations and international corporations. Speaking at a meeting of international gold producers, Gorbachev also said the United States and other Western nations misinterpreted the end of the Cold War as a victory for capitalism. Now the United States must listen to growing criticism that its economic policy is "a one-way street that hasn't benefited 80 percent of the people," he said.

Two years after Gorbachev resigned to his post as President of the Soviet Union, the United States, Mexico and Canada joined in the North American Free Trade Agreement, meant to expand to the rest of Latin America dissolving trade barriers on the continent. The idea is seen by many observers and governments in South America as a mere US attempt of annexation with no visible benefits for poorer countries.

Negotiations, which comprise 34 American countries vall but Cuba- are now in a standstill as rich nations refuse to cut agricultural subsidies. While the talks stall, the United States has pursued one-on-one free trade agreements. "At a time when the world is so inter-related, it is myopic to set national interests so far ahead of world problems," Gorbachev said. He said free trade economic policies set in Washington have led to "uncontrolled globalization" that mainly benefits "those who had the advantages in the first place."

And there was more for Bush and his conservative administration: Gorbachev said the US President should reconsider its policies -- "especially after they involved the entire world in the current crisis" in Iraq. He also criticized Bush for ignoring world opinion to reject the 1997 Kyoto Protocol, aimed at reducing greenhouse gases worldwide, on the grounds that it would hurt the U.S. economy.

My memory may be failing me, but I seem to recall that he actually ran for President of Russia years back - against either Yeltsin or Putin, and got only 2% of the vote.

Yeah. I'm having a senior moment on that one too. I think history should be kind to Gorby. He did, after all, come to terms with Reagan and the world is better for it. But he never gave up communism, which was the next step.

I think he is just angry that his opinion is irrelevant.

That's really the whole point on the Reagan legacy issue. Gorby was looking to reform Communism so it would survive, not so it would be destroyed. Reagan had other ideas...

Gorby hasn't been sober since the late 60's. He is despised by most Russians.

Gorbechov is a Communist. Why would anyone in the free world give him the time of day? Oh yeah, most journalists are socialists and communists, my bad.

I thought being a drunk was a great Russian tradition. :)

Gorbachev tried to come to terms with Reagan. Ronaldus Magnus would have nothing to do with it. He called the Soviets evil and walked away from the nuke pact. Reagan refused 'detente' and won...Gorby lost. If Reagan had something to say on a subject, I would listen carefully. Gorby has no more credibility than...well...Gorby the Clown.

Reverse Psychology.

By complaining that the rest of the world hasn't benefited from our free trade policies, he hopes to get us to continue shipping our factories overseas so they can sell us goods, that we used to make.

Moscow oligarch Potanin is buying out the South African gold mines, but the US better stay out of South America.

Right...

BTW: in Ukraine, the letter 'G' is often pronouced like an 'H'. So, to keep you smiling, here's a pair of our local "Horbachevs":

on the grounds that it would hurt the U.S. economy.

That was part of it. Another part is that the Kyoto Treaty is based on some wild-a$$ climate speculation that politicians have no business basing legislation on.

Gorbachev knows that when he dies most Russian will not pay much attention to him, he will get a bigger ovation here in the US by the 60's hippies who still think he is the reason the USSR fell, not Reagan.

Gorbachev's policies of Peristroika and Glasnost also helped, although without our arms buildup they wouldn't have meant anything significant. That said, Gorbachev is no longer relevant today, and he's still a Communist despite the fact that he's better than Stalin, Kruzchev, or Brezhnev (sp for the last two?)

Okay, maybe Reagan did kinda take advantage of this retardo- But what the hell, it was for a good cause.

It would be an act of kindness if someone would direct Mr. Gorbachev to either the nearest rest home or adult assisted living facility.
