Morning in America

June 12 -- The passing of former U.S. President Ronald W. Reagan left the world mourning and meant the Military District of Washington would have the solemn honor of rendering a state funeral for the former commander-and-chief.

The week-long ceremony featured numerous service members from every branch of the military working tirelessly to ensure the proper honors and respect were paid to the man many consider the “greatest president of the twentieth century,” credited with bringing an end to the Cold War, bringing prosperity and building the nation's might.

The Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard personnel who carried forward the funeral plan developed with the family were but bit players in history, although expressive of the national will to honor its great men. Those in uniform are asked to represent their country, in peace and in war. There is pride in that and their was great pride in expressing a nation's respect for President Reagan.

In the coming days, more material will come to be added to this site as materials are gathered and questions are addressed. The MDW Media Operations Center that undertook the task of assisting the media and the public to understand the military role is closing today. Personnel will be found in their customary duty locations in coming days, and will continue to provide help from those locations.

Comments and suggestions that the media or the public wish to make regarding the execution of any aspect of the state funeral may be sent to the following email address: mdwpaomediacenter@fmmc.army.mil.

The many questions posed in the Frequently Asked Questions portion of this site will continue to be worked for the time being to insure that our responses are as complete and accurate as we can make them.

The great and free press of the United States conveyed the final images of the funeral.

"Ronald Reagan belongs to the ages now, but we preferred it when he belonged to us," President George W. Bush said at the funeral service.

With the conclusion of the ceremony, the former president was taken to Andrews Air Force Base for a final flight back home to California for the family service and interment at the Reagan Library.

There, as the last rays of the sun pierced the California sky, Ronald Reagan was at last laid to rest.

Today the sun rose again. Morning in America.

Friday:
Throughout the day, salutes were fired in Reagan's honor by soldiers at every American military facility around the world -- 21-gun salutes at noon local time and a 50-gun salute at dusk.

I love this country. I was bursting at the seams the entire week with pride for our men and women in the military. God Bless America!

My son's unit filled out their request for absentee ballots in March! The military isn't taking any chances. I just don't know when the official ballots are actually printed and the time frame for mailing them out and for our military to get them sent back. I've told our son that if at all possible, just pay to mail it -- don't wait for collection en masse.

The Military District of Washington and all of the units that participated did an OUTSTANDING job. I am so proud of each and every one of them. A special thanks goes out to the many musical units. The hours and hours of music provided at the Burial ceremony, the beautiful music at the National Cathedral (Mansions of the Lord did me in), the military bands, the USAF Singing Sergeants and other vocal groups - it was all performed to perfection by those remarkably talented men and women of our armed forces. God Bless them all. I hope a few Presidential Unit Citations are awarded.
