Careful, thoughtful and able article. I AM curious why he happened to use the Asheville Citizen-Times as his prome example. Only people in this narrow corner of the Blue Ridge are even aware of this [articular fishwrap.

But, presumably, they are only suspected of being Islamic militants because, after all, they might turn out to be long-hidden Nazis or perhaps holdouts from the Irish Republican Army or -- who knows? -- maybe Timothy McVeigh's buddies from the "red states" in America.

LOL! I love OSC...

The other thing I discovered years ago during the Clinton scandals, is what I call "Selective Editing". As an example of this, I had read a NY Times article on the internet (by Gertz or similar name), that discussed one of the scandals (maybe it was the Chinese missles?). It was to be a revealing article, and somewhere it was mentioned it might wind up being a Pulitzer Prize winning article.

Anyway, our local Charlotte Observer (Disturber), printed the article. (or so I thought). It changed the name, leaving Clinton out of it. As I read the article, I thought that this couldn't be the same article I read from the NY Times. So I went back to the Times article. I printed them both out. As I compared articles, I noted that the Disturber had 'selectively edited' the article by taking 1 line out of each short paragraph. The line removed was always something bad about Clinton! This was not editing to shorten the article, but to 'water down' the things said about Clinton.

I wish I would have saved both articles. I have since written to the Observer editors about their "selective editing" which still occurs. I never receive a response.

No amount of solid proof could ever convince a liberal.

Their emotions always trump facts.

"Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld, making no mention of the prisoner abuse scandal that has led to calls for his ouster, told a cheering crowd of graduating cadets Saturday that they will help win the global fight against terror."

So if they'd post the Rumsfeld one, why not this one?

"Clinton, while speaking about the release of his upcoming book made no mention of the sex scandal in the White House that led to calls for his ouster, as he spoke with a cheering crowed of Manhattan socialites Saturday, or about the years he ignored the global fight against terror."

Good article, covers all the agitprop trix.
We're so used to it we forget we even see it.
Well, I don't actually, getting rid of my TV was the best thing that ever happened to me.

Would you bet that he was visiting in Asheville and possibly a bit shocked that even small town US papers suffer from this bias. Or maybe since he took national news that was likely wireservice copy or based on copy he wanted to show that the bias has wormed it way even into small town papers.

But the reporters covering science in America today are so wretchedly mis-educated that they don't even know what questions to ask when interviewing biased sources.

He's being too kind. Reporters covering science may (or may not) have taken a science course at some point. Probably didn't pass it, but it's their intentions that count, right?

Here is the previously posted article.

Orson Scott Card: The Fanatics Who Tell Us the News

Tolik regularly posts Orson Scott Card articles and keeps a ping list for OSC.

From Tolik's pings:
His own political website: http://www.ornery.org/index.html is heavily populated by American- and other Leftists who are delightfully annoyed by Mr. Card's conservatism. He does not post on that site and its moderated by somebody else. He is a registered Democrat upset with hijacking of his party by the Left.

Hope you don't mind Tolik. I appreciate your pings to OSC.

You gotta love Card. I gotta bookmark this and come back to it. I am, unfortunately, too tired at the moment to get through the whole thing. Great mind.

"Their emotions always trump facts."

... you have to add their sacrosanct agenda takes precedence over all else, including truth and facts.

That is true..

I heard something on NPR that left you thinking the left would rather Clinton would have died instead of Reagan so they got a week of limelight. I don't like the man, don't agree with him and think he is a fool, but I don't wish death upon him. That is pretty sick stuff.

I also get sick of the over the top rhetoric. A politician makes a statement that is in disagreement with someone else, headline screams "Kerry assails Bush." They basically create a perception of two guys in a street fight and leave the facts they disagreed about undiscussed.
