Michael Reagan, President Reagan's oldest son, a nationally syndicated radio host and columnist for NewsMax Magazine, made the following statement to NewsMax.com Sunday afternoon.
"I can think about the times that we spent together as a father and son, sometimes just literally talking about nothing, but just being there and being in awe of him.
"I think about those days when he was governor of California and how wonderful a job he did for the state. I can think about the times that he allowed me to be in his presence when tough decisions were ready to be made.
"For example, on the evening that he chose George W. Bush’s father to be his running mate as the candidate for the vice presidency. Dad invited me to be in his inner circle as those decisions were made.
"I remember the night in 1976 when I asked him what he missed most about not winning his party’s nomination as their presidential candidate. He said to me: 'Michael, what I miss most is not being able to sit down with the Russians and saying to them nyet because it’s been so long that we’ve been giving up too much to get along with them. It’s time for the Russians to get along with us.'
"But what I remember most about my dad, and what puts me at peace with where he is today, is a conversation I had with him as he was flying back on Air Force One and he allowed me to accompany him back to Point Mugu [Air Base, Calif.].
"It was Easter Week in the last year of his presidency, and he looked at me and he counted out 'nine' on his fingers. I asked what that meant, and he said: 'Michael, it will be nine more months when I will be able to feel the freedom once again to go to church each and every Sunday. You know, Michael, ever since I was shot I have worried about putting other people in harm’s way by being among them, so I haven’t been to church on a regular basis and even though I have offered my presidency up to God I haven’t been with God on Sundays. That’s what I’m looking forward to.'
"And as I look back over Dad’s 93 years, what puts me truthfully at peace is knowing that my father was fully aware of who his God is. Not only did he offer up his presidency but he offered up his life a long time ago to serve his God.
"And so now the peace I feel is knowing that my father has gone home to be with his God and his Lord, and that is the greatest gift that he ever gave me."
We need more leaders like him and GW Bush who put this country first, which is the oath they take. We have lost this spirit in this country thanks to the global socialists in the other party who are still attempting to run everything with the media's help.
Thank you President Reagan for freeing us from the fear of the USSR.

I have yet to read or hear anyhting about President Reagan that hasn't moved me to tears. This is just one more thing that demonstrates what a wonderful man this guy was.
Watching a few of the specials on Pres. Reagan this weekend, it's funny how time let's things slip by and in watching these shows I am once again inspired by the man and what he accomplished with his time here on earth.
The class shown by the Reagan family second to none.
I agree with your statement regarding GW too, I've just finished a couple of good books on the faith of GW and there is just so much negativity thrown at him from the radical-left that you just KNOW that he has got to be a very centered, solidly based man to remain true to his core beliefs.
God Speed Pres. Reagan...we will miss you but your legacy lives on.

I'm with you. I caught a number of the reports on President Reagan on Fox this weekend and was awe struck by what the man accomplished. He put together a great team, saved the nation - if not the world - and forever changed the dialogue of politics. Ronald Reagan literally moved the political center of both the nation and the world.
I am hopeful that his passing will reinspire every American (certainly every Republican) to fight harder than ever to ensure this country's existence and progress on all fronts.

Did I read/see/hear somewhere that Michael Reagan does NOT support Pres. Bush?
I know he's with God, and I know he's now free from a body that imprisoned him these last years, but I'm still going to miss him and I'm still going to wish we had just a little longer.

Regarding Reagan in general - I recall what it was like during his administration, during which time I lived in Madison, Wisconsin. I saw the most vitriolic attacks on him in the local press, the most distorted and bizarre mischaracterizations appeared in the editorials of The Capital Times and in the editorial cartoons of Mike Konopaki. I cannot seem to find any of them online - perhaps someone out there has some to post. Reagan was depicted as this vampire like figure - preying on the poor, a war monger who was edging us toward nuclear doomsday by not choosing the diplomatic compromise with the Soviet Union.
Dinesh D'Souza's piece on NRO Online (actually a replay of a 1997 column) points out what was actually said and written about Reagan in the past. There were incredible distortions and attacks and I think that we need to be forthright today as we mourn his passing - in calling out those who demagogue'd against him and the Reagan Revolution. To see Ted Kennedy offering condolences turns my stomach - because I remember the vitriol and bile he spewed while Reagan was in office.
Seeing the replay of famous speeches by President Reagan on C-SPAN really has been a walk down memory lane.
Newt Gingrich on Fox News said it best when he said that the Reagan legacy lives on in George W. Bush.
