We know better than to listen to the likes of Dan Blather!

Ronald Reagan is the single biggest reason I am a recovered liberal. I knew this day was coming, and I knew it would be soon, I feel like I just lost part of my family.

Let's Win One for the Gipper

Notre Dame Football Coach ROCKNE:
Well, boys ... I'm going to tell you something I've kept to myself for years -- None of you ever knew George Gipp. It was long before your time.
But you know what a tradition he is at Notre Dame... And the last thing he said to me -- "Rock," he said -
"sometime, when the team is up against it -- and the breaks are beating the boys -- tell them to go out there with all they got and win just one for the Gipper. I don't know where I'll be then, Rock", he said -"but I'll know about it - and I'll be happy."

There is a hushed stillness as Rockne and the crowd of boys look at each other.

PLAYER # 12: Well, what are we waiting for?
With a single roar, the players rushed through the doorway.

HIGH FLIGHT

Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds -- and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of -- wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air.
Up, up the long, delirious burning blue,
I've topped the windswept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or even eagle flew.
And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

--John Gillespie Magee, Jr. (1922-1941)

The last great president (no offense President Bush) has passed into God's waiting arms. May he be blessed in his eternal reward, and may his family know God's love and peace in their time of sorrow.

Just wanted to say I'm saddened as we all are over the passing of the Gipper. I'm sorry I will be away all week in Bermuda and will not be able to follow the news and read the threads as I would have liked. If any of you make it to D.C. to attend the state services, please Freepmail me and let me know your feelings on it. I had planned to be in D.C. for this memorial, but it is now impossible. I feel as though I have lost one of the family.
Talk to you next week.

Billie, I'm not able to bump the thread you did Jan. 2001, but here is the tribute you posted to President Reagan. Do you remember this??

One More for the Gipper

Ronald Wilson Reagan
40th president of the U.S. (1981-89)

This one's for all the Reagan lovers and those who pesonally asked me to do a sketch of Ronald Reagan.    I think the first one is most everyone's favorite photo of him.  Hope you enjoy.    He was the first President I really ever cared about, and in some ways our President Elect Bush reminds me of him.

I plan to post a thread on January 21st or 22nd with drawings of the inaugurations of the last three men I've ever called President:

  • President Ronald W. Reagan
  • President George H. W. Bush
  • President George W. Bush
(Notice how they all have a middle initial "W"!)  Hope you'll look for it, and as always, feel free to save, copy, or use these drawings any way you wish.

Billie

P.S. You might find a few surprise FReepers on the dais with Dubya! :^)

Love you President Reagan. You restored Americans' faith in the goodness and greatness of our country during a dark time in our nation's history and you helped bring down the Evil Empire that menaced for decades the freedom of the world. You will be remembered in every American's heart for the ages. RIP, dear friend.

Ronald Reagan's Announces He Has Alzheimer's Disease

Let me thank you, the American people, for giving me the great honor of allowing me to serve as your president. When the Lord calls me home, whenever that may be, I will leave the greatest love for this country of ours and eternal optimism for its future.  I now begin the journey that will lead me into the sunset of my life. I know that for America there will always be a bright dawn ahead.

1994

My fellow Americans:

I have recently been told that I am one of the millions of Americans who will be afflicted with Alzheimer's disease.

Upon learning this news, Nancy and I had to decide whether as private citizens we would keep this a private matter or whether we would make this news known in a public way.

In the past, Nancy suffered from breast cancer and I had cancer surgeries. We found through our open disclosures we were able to raise public awareness. We were happy that as a result many more people underwent testing. They were treated in early stages and able to return to normal, healthy lives.

So now we feel it is important to share it with you. In opening our hearts, we hope this might promote greater awareness of this condition. Perhaps it will encourage a clear understanding of the individuals and families who are affected by it.

At the moment, I feel just fine. I intend to live the remainder of the years God gives me on this earth doing the things I have always done. I will continue to share life's journey with my beloved Nancy and my family. I plan to enjoy the great outdoors and stay in touch with my friends and supporters.

Unfortunately, as Alzheimer's disease progresses, the family often bears a heavy burden. I only wish there was some way I could spare Nancy from this painful experience. When the time comes, I am confident that with your help she will face it with faith and courage.

In closing, let me thank you, the American people, for giving me the great honor of allowing me to serve as your president. When the Lord calls me home, whenever that may be, I will leave the greatest love for this country of ours and eternal optimism for its future.

I now begin the journey that will lead me into the sunset of my life. I know that for America there will always be a bright dawn ahead.

Thank you, my friends.

Sincerely,

Ronald Reagan

If it wasn't for Dutch Reagan I doubt we would be pecking on a keyboard and punching stuff in to the Internet, right now.

Four more years of James Earl Carter would have turned out to be insufferable.

I do remember that now, jellybean. Thank you for posting it again. I think we all feel like part of 'us' is gone now, but President Reagan is whole again, and that's a blessing.

I think this link will work for the Inaugural thread January 22, 2001:
