DALLAS - A 57-year-old woman says she was ejected from a terminal at the Dallas-Fort Worth International airport after showing military recruits an anti-war campaign poster.
Carole Ward showed the recruits an 8 1/2-by-11 inch poster of a composite illustration of President Bush made up of the faces of soldiers who have died in Iraq. It bore the title "Faces of Death."
Some people found the poster offensive and the woman became belligerent with an American Airlines gate agent, according to Tim Wagner, a spokesman for the airline.
He also said Ward made some passengers feel uncomfortable while waiting to board her plane during a thunderstorm Tuesday night and presented a security threat.
"She's not only going around talking to these recruits, saying they shouldn't join the Army, they shouldn't fight in the war, she's also forcing the poster on them," Wagner told The Dallas Morning News in today's online edition.
Ward, who was returning home to Albuquerque, N.M., from a Libertarian convention in Atlanta, said she started a conversation with a few of several dozen recruits in the airport.
She passed around the poster, that had messages to elect Libertarian Aaron Russo president and to stop a possible military draft.
According to Wagner, some people thought the poster had pictures of soldiers' bodies and said the material definitely could be "considered offensive."
Although Wagner said the gate agent asked airport police to remove the woman from the secure side of the terminal, airport spokesman Ken Capps said that the officers only monitored the situation and Ward left on her own.
She says she was forced to leave the hotel without her bag and spend the night in a hotel.
At first, I felt empathy for carolontheweb; I don't want anyone censored, no matter what nonsense he spouts. That's because I don't want anyone muzzling me, I don't want anyone being able to portray himself as a martyr, and because that's life in a free republic. But then came the fantastic claims, and her twisting of words. So much for empathy. But I still defend her right to be heard.
She claims that threads criticizing Israel get shut down, but no such threads have been pulled since last year. Is she a liar, or merely too lazy to keep up with things?
Carol takes a classic 'Net hoax, the "shooting down, via missile," of Flight 800, and embellishes it a little. However, her version contains no more evidence than the original hoax, as perpetrated by retired United Airlines pilot, Richard Russell.
But what do you expect, from someone whose journalistic gold standard is "the Enquirer" and "the fringes of the web"? Actually, that pairing is grossly unfair to the Enquirer, which has gone pretty legit (did you catch its coverage of the Robert Blake case?). Carol is thinking either of the pre-O.J. Enquirer, or of the Weekly World News. But "the fringes of the web"?! Even little kids know that that's Hoaxville!
Carol also provides no evidence of a conspiracy of Bill Clinton and "his Jewish cabal," to murder 168 innocents at Oklahoma City, just paranoid musings, conspiracy fantasies, and rabid anti-Semitism (or did I just say the same thing three times?). Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence, not "pre-packaged assertions." Carol does no legwork, provides no evidence, engages in no "opposition research." If, as she insists, there are so many bodies, and so many crimes that can't be covered up, the gutter must be rife with evidence. So, why hasn't she found any? She demands that critics rebut her, but you cannot rebut nothing. As an anti-Semitic hoax, this doesn't come close to The Protocols of the Elders of Zion.
I don't know what is worse, Carol's laziness or her cowardice. At first she claims she is being "shut down," only to later cheat, by saying that she is either "shut or shouted down." Her saying that ANY criticism of her statements is the equivalent of shouting her down or worse, is identical to the scam played by multiculturalists, who define any disagreement with their views as acts of repression.
To Carol: Honey, if you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen!

FRegards,

So brownshirts didn't exist to stifle dissent? It's not as if the appellation is apples and oranges from his statement. I'd rather hear the reasons the lady is mistaken, than some clown telling her to shut up.
yeah right. The jails are full of people who are speaking out against the government.
sarcasm/off
No kidding. Only 8 posts in and we're already on Nazis? Clearly the thread was still in it's infancy and not nearly long enough to have been ready for the Nazi reference.
Bush is, at worst, an FDR figure.
John Kerry combines the worst qualities of Neville Chamberlain, Benedict Arnold and Frank Burns.
Given that one of those two men will attend their inauguration in less than 8 months, I couldn't really give two grains of mouse crap if any of you Bush-bashers have your panties in a bunch about the support the President recieves on this forum. Go cry somewhere else.
Probably has a beefcake pinup of Bill Ayers on his wall.
Sure. In 1923-1944 Germany. Not in the USA and not in 2004.
ROTFLMBO!
The stifling of dissent is consequent to a mindset, not a nation or time in history.
Yet the fact remains that NO dissent is being stifled in the USA in 2004.
DID YOU READ THE ARTICLE???
YES!!!
DID YOU READ THE COMMENT I QUOTED AND RESPONDED TOO???
Now go pound sand.
Now go read what I responded to, and ask yourself if it comes out of the mouth of a brownshirt, or a Jeffersonian who supports free expression with the understanding and expectation that reason will prevail if ideas are free to flow.
Anyone who believes I was talking about the government (and the SA wasn't the government, btw) didn't read what I quoted and responded to. Go back and read what I responded to, and what I said to that person. Obviously if you drop the context of the remark it won't make any sense.
Good words.
Did you actually see what I responded to? Can you quote it?
Did you actually see what I responded to? Can you quote it?
Harassment is a crime.
Would someone telling this mental defective in DFW airport to "shut up" be a brownshirt too, or just expressing THEIR opinion?
Personally, I would have ripped her poster to bits.
Yes, all anti-war and anti-government dissent is being suppressed. That's why Churchillbuff posts an anti-war thread every day, because you get to post to FR from the gulag. That's why I post the Useful Idiot Caption-A-Rama every week and never run out of pictures of anti-war protestors holding up anti-Bush signs almost as if the 1st Amendment was still in force! Yep, you caught us. In fact, the secret police are arresting you right...now! Don't drop the soap.
