You're welcome. I was sure someone else would post it before me because it was such a great article but nobody did so I went for it. The graphic is cute too.
I think Ben Stein has a very good finger on the pulse of the Heartland. He seems to reside in LA, but sounds like he left his heart back in Idaho.
I understand that the blue/red color assignment on the map is a reasult of a freaky accident in election 2000 reporting. I would humbly suggest the reversing of the color scheme. Shouldn't the red (communist and in general leftist symbol) color be given to the democrats?
Great article. I live in one of the happy smiley face states too. I have a long distance boss, who is headquartered in Connecticutt. She came out to Utah for training, and her first remark to me was how friendly the people are here. "Everyone says hi and smiles at you, and I don't even know them." This happens all over in 'flyover' country. I can remember living in NYC as a 19 year old nanny. I was expressly told NOT to look people in the eye or say hi to them, especially on the street. That makes for a much colder place to live...
Spent all of my childhood summers in North Idaho on the Pend. It truly is beautiful. But don't move here. The bears'll get ya.
Another plus---During recent elections the dims failed to enter nearly all of the races in North Idaho!!! Must be afraid of the Nazi's--all six of em.
Bookmarked & bumped!
Ya gotta love flyover country. I've lived in Utah, Tennessee, Iowa, Minnesota, and I love it. People in California were okay, but there were just too darn many of them. I'll take the heartland any day.
Really like the article plushaye. Thanks for posting it. Optimism and cheerfulness win every time.
I live in California, one of the unhappy states, nevertheless I am pretty darn happy anyway. Spend a lot of time explaining to liberals the facts of life. Sometimes I even get them to think a bit differently.....there is hope!!!
For once, "Better Red Than Dead" is a true statement.
---It truly is beautiful. But don't move here. The bears'll get ya. ---
That goes double for Northwestern Montana. :^)
This is simply outstanding.Hated for the post to end.
I've lived in California also, in the smaller cities. Very friendly people outside San Francisco and the great LA area.
Fantastic article. Incidentally, I find this is true on an individual level as well. Conservatives (which I have encountered) are more positive and happy, while liberals tend towards anger and pessimism.
As a current resident of a frowny-face state, it's nice to see we smiley-faced ones are really winning. ;-)
BTW, agree with another poster--reversing the color scheme would be most appropriate.
You confused me for a moment, since Pat Sajak is a great conservative.
I agree. I remember in the 80's that the blue states were always the Reagan states. I don't know when the color scheme got switched.
I did the same. I think he used to call his son "Little Perfect" or something like that in all his stories about Sandpoint. His articles always made me want to visit there someday.
This article makes me want to subscribe again.
well I live here too. Can you beat the beauty that was here today? NO way.
"the people in the media in these places often -- but not always -- loathe and fear their own country in many ways."
This applies to many in our best universities as well. What a shame.
"This makes me feel like posting about some layoffs."
Why is that?
Yes, top of his class at Yale Law School.
