As compared to what? Where is the support for the alternatives?

This is good--the GC will not roll over and let Brahimi dictate how their government will be structured.

"There is wide opposition to the Brahimi plan in Iraq," Chalabi's spokesman Entifadh Qanbar told reporters in New York on Friday. "The whole idea of having the U.N. or any foreign entity to appoint or lead a political process in Iraq is not acceptable," said Qanbar, He labeled Brahimi an "Arab nationalist" who once supported ousted dictator Saddam Hussein. On second thoughts, this is bad... without consensus, there will still be "it's imposed" mentality. On balance, we are better off evolving the IGC than disbanding it. Why not expand the IGC and have the IGC be the body to appoint the President and Prime Minister etc.? And let the IGC remain as a consultative body.

Yeah really. The Shiites fear Lakhdar Brahimi wants to bring the Sunni minority back into power through the back door. Its just like the U.S government to pine for the bad old days of Ba'athist imposed "stability" in Iraq that never was.

The UN didn't lift a finger to help Iraqis all these years under the brutal Saddam regime and now they get a say in who takes over next? The Iraqis should send Brahimi packing and make him feel lucky that they didn't string him up as an example.

Brahimi proposed dissolving the council and naming a caretaker government of "men and women known for their honesty, integrity and competence" And a UN representative will recognize these qualities how?

What Iraq and Afghanistan both need is strict government wide term limits for all who are in power. If they just have thugs in charge for a lifetime, they will descend into a thugocracy.
