The problem came about when Emperor Constantine hijacked Christianity and turned it into a State Church;Yep, I've been trying to finish "Constantine's Sword" which talks all about this. I know many Freepers despise the author, James Carroll, but this book rings true for me. Amazon.com: Books: Constantine's Sword: The Church and the Jews: A ...

"The Islamic Sufis never subscribed to this Jihadist insanity"The Hindus criticize some Sufi sects as being Jihadists. Sorry but I forget the details
That is my understanding as well. BTW, do you know if that 72 virgin thing is really in the Koran? If it is, it would be interesting to know the context.
If not in Koran it's in the Hadith

The God of the Old Testament (same God as in the New) was brutal in our way of thinking--concerning the conquest of Canaan. The Torah's civil laws seem harsh too, by our way of thinking--calling for the death penalty for a number of offenses.
However--if the residents of Canaan were anything like their Arab counterparts now--its no wonder the command then was to totally wipe them out. Also, you'll find no general command to go out and conquer (like in the Koran) as God's commands to take the land were limited geographically to Palestine, not a general world-wide military offensive, as certainly seems to be the case of the Koran's god.
As to severe laws--they were less severe and much more reasonable than any other contemporary law codes. And many of the "death" offenses could be avoided by paying fines....hence execution was actually rarer in ancient Israel than we suppose. Things like required two witnesses for capitol offenses also put a check on abuse. The ancient world was virtually always a brutal severe place--and the ancient Jews had brutal severe laws to deal with the environment they were in.
Moreover you'll find no Jew or Christian today who really wants to put Old Testament law into literal effect for today. (yes I do know about Christin Reconstructionists...).
There are millions of Muslims today however, that want and have already, in at least a few countries, put 8th Century Sharia law into effect however.

Ding! We have a winner! Condemning Islam isn't good when your own religion has some pretty dark points to it, just realize that they're behind the times. Facing the might of the United States may just be what they needed to make them grow up quickly.Christianity's founder submitted himself to sacrifice, and in fact corrected the misguided beliefs of his disciples that he would be a warrior king. Christianity was as a result founded as a religion of peace, obedience to civil authority, acceptance of one's earthly station, and (at times) martyrdom. There is no doubt that it has seen its dark periods;and yet it is not maturation that brings it out of those periods; rather, it is a return to its roots, its fundamentals.
Given the actions of Mohammed and his disciples in the 7th century, the last thing we want is for Islam to maintain its roots. What really needs to happen is for its strictest adherents to be defeated, decisively, leaving behind only those who would liberalize it out of relevance (much like is happening to Christianity, sadly, in much of Europe and North America.)
