I read in a bio of Muhammed or related source that when Muhammed went into the Kibla, he removed all the symbols and statues of ALL THE GODS AND IMAGES except for the representation of Mary mother of Jesus.

This implies of course, that there was some veneration of Mary among the populace of Mecca. hmmmm.
