Scarborough: Hillary 'Strong-armed' MSNBC to Kill Story

MSNBC TRANSCRIPT

Scarborough Country

April 28, 2004

JOE SCARBOROUGH: Today, the senator‘s office tried to strong-arm us into retracting that story. . . .

Last night, we showed you comments made by Hillary Clinton that criticized George Bush and America‘s foreign policy in the Middle East. Her complaints run by Arab newspapers and repeated across the Middle East. She said this—quote—

“Their stubbornness and arrogance is breathtaking. And, as a result, we continue to go down a path that I think is fraught with horrible dangers, especially for the young men and women serving in Iraq, but also for Iraqis, for the stability of the region.”. . .

Early this morning, Ms. Clinton‘s office began calling our staff and the president of MSNBC, claiming the statements we reported last night were never made by the senator. . . .

This morning at about 10:00 a.m., we got an angry phone call from Senator Clinton‘s office. They were demanding an apology and a retraction. They said she never spoke to the Arab press. She never criticized the president, and, in fact, never did the interview at all.

Our producers immediately double-checked our sources and we tracked down the reporter who did the interview with Senator Clinton, and by noon we found out that the interview did take place. And the senator‘s press secretary then started to back down.

And by 4:30 this afternoon, the senator‘s representatives admitted that she did the interview. She did know the reporter was writing to an international audience, and she did criticize the president.

And again I say," the democRATS dont have a donkey as a symbol for no reason at all." I guess this makes her the head jackass.

as he's starting to think it's going to happen as well. Everything is proceding precisely as Bill & Hillary have planned it.

Has it crossed your mind that Bill/Hill are actually just arrogant and rather stupid and that the only reason why they get away with stuff is because of an enabling media and Democrat Party cultists that share their ideology?

Look, I'd like to believe it. They are capable of such. Uh-huh, I conclude these people are dumb and are just as delusional as that egomanic with the delegates.

I think as big a story was Scarborough's first piece about Bush not asking Rumsfeld's opinion about going to war. He amped that story up to such a degree that I had to turn him off. I'm afraid this might be trouble for Bush.

What? This is why I don't watch his show.

I take it he took that from Chris Matthews' interview with Rumsfeld today.

Why would you think it would be trouble for Bush, though? You can't expect the president to act in a manner to anticipate every lie or spin thrown his way.

If you watch the Matthews/Rumsfeld interview it is plain that even though that's the angle Matthews played up, that was not the point and Rumsfeld gave a very detailed accounting here. It was ridiculous the way Matthews characterized it and very shallow. Rumsfeld painted a picture of a CiC who consulted him on the readiness of our ability to wage war---not IF we should go. And Rumsfeld said there is zero doubt the president made the right decision. Sounds right to me.

I think that the reply line on this should be a comparison of illary to Arafat. They both say one thing intended for the "world" audience, but in Arabic, it all comes out as "kill the infidels".

Perhaps her reply upon learning this technique was kissing Suda Arafat on the cheek! :-)

One day it will catch up with them....mark my word.

I'd like to believe you're correct, but it seems so unlikely:

Please, no more Clinton investigations

I was in NJ when Lautenberg became the stand in candidate for Torecelli. I never thought they would allow that to happen. I am not one to say that Hillary will be coronated in September, but if it does, Hillary will not have to run the gauntlet and the media would build her up. I would never say that it won't happen.

I'm less shocked that HilLIARy made those statements than by the fact that MSNBC actually fought back

Could it be that some of the liberal media is beginning to wake up?????? just maybe??????

I personally don't know how Hillary could strong arm MSNBC or anyone in the mainstream leftist media. The bias is evident. They have their heads so far up Hillary's derriere that we don't know where they end and Hillary begins. To think that she even had the time to step out of her safely guarded cocoon to critique her fellow comrades is rather shocking to me.

JACK BURKMAN, REPUBLICAN STRATEGIST: I would issue this challenge to Senator Clinton, challenge her to go on “The Today Show,” challenge her to come on this program, challenge her to go on the local “Today Show” in New York and tell a New York audience exactly what she told the Arab press. You know what you will find. She doesn‘t have the guts to do it.

SCARBOROUGH: Hillary Clinton, one of the most powerful, one of the most influential politicians in America, possibly in the world, she makes these comments, which I must say, shocked me the first time I read them, and yet I haven‘t seen them on the wires. I haven‘t seen AP report them. I haven‘t seen them in “The New York Times.” I haven‘t seen them in “The Washington Post.”

BURKMAN: I used to work for a guy named Rick Lazio. And we fought this in 2000, how they covered the campaign from the viewpoint of Hillary Rodham Clinton. The media loves her. The networks love her. They cover for her. They cover for her.

SCARBOROUGH: I want to read you a letter to “Front Page” magazine from a Marine who is serving in Iraq. And this is what he wrote—quote—“Our enemy has learned that the key to defeating the mighty American military is by swaying public opinion at home and abroad. We love to criticize ourselves almost to an endless degree. Our enemies see this as a weakness and are trying to exploit it.”

September is too late. But even IF this silly, scare yourself to death scenario plays out,she would still have ALL of October to deal with;not to mention the debates, which she would NOT do well in.

Jersey politics have smelled for a long time.

Hillary "won" the N.Y. Senate seat through massive fraud and corruption.

A NATIONAL ELECTION IS SOMETHING QUITE DIFFERENT!

Whilst I don't doubt,in the least, how evil, vile, corrupt, and underhanded the Clintons are, they have lost a lot of their power, they do NOT still "own" the DNC,Drudge, talk radio, cable news, the Internet, and yes, even the network news (though most there would cheer)would NOT roll over and take her anointment without lots of condemnation and dirt throwing.

This nation is still 1/2 and 1/2,with a rather low level of indies. It is dead certain, that even 1/2 of the "purist"/MORE CONSERVATIVE THAN THOU group would instantly become crawl over broken glass topped burning lava,to vote for President Bush, should the tinfoil scenario come to pass.

The Clintons (especially Hillary) has ALWAYS strong armed the press. They may think the same way that she does but she definately STRONG ARMS them into getting HER message out (not the complete truth). They helped get Hillary elected to the senate and that's a FACT. The will also do it again if she runs for president (and that's a FACT).

One of her major problems is that she can't control the internet. That drives her CRAZY (crazier). If she could, she would shut it down today. Otherwise people will know that she is a liar and doesn't exactly care much about the American people or the military.
