Philippines smashes Jemaah Islamiyah cell, suspect arrested
MANILA : Philippines authorities have cracked a Jemaah Islamiyah cell days before some 43 million voters in the country are due to elect their President, as well as more than 17,000 national, provincial and local officials.
Security officials said the arrest of one of the cell's suspected members further indicates that a plot to disrupt the elections is in the works.
Philippines police paraded terrorism suspect Jordan Mamso Abdullah at a news conference.
The 46-year-old, believed to be a member of the Southeast Asian terror group - Jemaah Islamiyah - was arrested on the southern island of Mindanao.
He is said to have received financing from Osama bin Laden's al-Qaeda network, according to a confession by Hambali, the suspected operations chief for the JI. (snip)
