"I will never cower before any master nor bend to any threat"

Two Chinese diplomats, away from their Los Angeles consulate improperly, recently sped their vehicle past a Los Alamos National Laboratory guard post near classified facilities in what U.S. officials think was an intelligence mission, The Washington Times has learned.

How many of you have been in an earthquake of 5+ on the Richter Scale?

Quite a few. I was in Federal Way, WA in 1964. Epicenter was about 1 mile from my house. The shaking lasted about 45 seconds. We had some minor cleaning up to do around the house. A few chimneys in the neighborhood broke free from houses.

The Landers quake in 1992 shook the house in San Diego for almost a minute. I had to put all my library books back on the shelf and put my wife's pile of shoe boxes back up in the closet. The shoe boxes actually flew off the closet shelf and landed on me in the waterbed. A great way to wake up.

Turner wouldn't say where Souter was jogging, describe the nature of the attack or the justice's injuries.

Perhaps there is hope is this event. Recall that a conservative is a liberal who had just been mugged. We can only hope!

Yellowstone Park unlikely to blow up anytime soon: No signs of cataclysmic eruption

By MIKE STARK
Of The Gazette Staff (Billings, Montana)

Here's a reason to breathe easier: Civilization probably won't be crippled anytime soon by a pulverizing volcanic eruption at Yellowstone National Park.

....

The findings, which have already drawn praise from some and will likely spur controversy, appear in the April issue of GSA Today and the May issue of Geology.

Here are some things that stood out for me re: Topeka, Kansas.

There are 7 reservoirs within a 50 mile radius of the town, for one thing.

And a couple of the major employers in the town are a branch of SBC, and also a railroad, the Burlington Northern Santa Fe. Not to mention a whole lot of other businesses.

"Topeka's Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. plant is the world's largest producer of earthmover tires and the corporation's sole North American manufacturer of earthmover tires for mining and construction operations. The Topeka plant is also a major manufacturer of radial truck tires used worldwide."

.....

The town is also ranked on several lists of small towns offering a good quality of life for its inhabitants.

"Topeka was named a FIVE STAR community in the 5th Annual Quality of Life Quotient survey by Expansion Management Magazine. A FIVE STAR rating is the top rating available and considers "peace of mind," "affordable decent housing," "standard of living," "traffic congestion and safety," "air accessibility," "adult education levels," "adult employability," and "continuing education." To the editors quality of life means being able to afford to take part in the "American Dream,..." .

link goes to their Chamber of Commerce, but when I clicked on it to post this, it stalled and wouldn't bring me back to this page, so you might lose your place if you click the link, just a warning!

That reminded me of that hotel in Rome, then saw that you and Letitring were talking about the same thing! Hmmm.

Oh, I never miss a cuss word, they stick to me like glue.

To see the words, all that was required was to right click your mouse, hold it down and highlight the blank space.

You then have white words in a blue highlighted area.

OK, so I didn't bother to read that part, but did have fun in learning a new trick.

More on the hotel fire in Rome..........

Rome hotel fire doesn't faze Roddick

COX NEWS SERVICE

The thing that struck Blanche Roddick, at home in Boca Raton, Fla., was how calm her son sounded. It was early Saturday morning in Rome, and Andy Roddick was standing on the balcony of his burning hotel, speaking into his cellphone and describing in a newsman's measured clip the chaos all around him.

Guests at the Grand Hotel Parco dei Principi were trying to escape the licking flames by jumping onto the wraparound balcony outside Roddick's sixth-floor suite. He heard screaming outside his door.

When Blanche, summoning the most soothing voice she could muster under the circumstances, suggested that Andy - in Rome to play in this week's Italian Open - wet some bathroom towels and stick them under his door, he corrected her.

"Mom," he said, "it's way beyond that."

Roddick, the reigning U.S. Open champion and the No. 2-ranked tennis player in the world, had awakened around 5 a.m. to an acrid smell. He padded to his front door, swung it open and was assaulted by billowy black smoke.

There were people in the hallway, groping for fresh air. Some of them were hysterical. Roddick, 21, pulled close to a dozen people into his spacious upgraded digs - the hotel management had insisted on opening its Royal Suite to him - and herded them onto the balcony.

There they huddled, awaiting help. Soot was falling from the sky. Bodies were landing like birds on Roddick's terrace.

Sjeng Schalken, a 6-foot-4 tennis player from the Netherlands, dropped like an albatross into Roddick's open arms. He had jumped from his room on the seventh floor.

Schalken's wife, Ricky, was another of the half-dozen people Roddick guided to a safe landing. In January at the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam event of the year, Roddick had faced Schalken in the quarterfinals and dispatched him in three breezy sets.

They had been fierce opponents then. But now Roddick and Schalken were comrades, banding together. As the heat grew more intense, the bodies on Roddick's balcony grew more dense. Roddick told his mother there were two dozen of them jumbled together, waiting to be rescued.

At one point, Roddick told his mother, "I have my head about me. It's amazing how calm I am."

Somebody had to be. A few people on the balcony grew more panicky with every passing minute. Roddick had to get in the faces of a couple of people who were easily twice his age and tell them in the nicest way possible to get a grip.

Aussies fear self-infected terrorists
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1128110/posts

"Canberra, , May. 1 (UPI) -- Australia is planning for the possibility of terrorists infecting themselves with deadly germs and then spreading the disease through the population.

This new concept of suicide bioterrorism will be discussed during a closed-door Monday workshop in Canberra by the director of terrorism studies at the Australian National University, Clive Williams, the Australian reported Saturday.

Williams said bio-terrorists could infect themselves with a contagious disease, such as smallpox or ebola. Between the time the person became contagious and the time he or she became too ill to move about, the terrorist could go into crowded public areas and try to spread the disease by close contact."

Don't read the article about the widow whose husband was killed in our war, 2 days before the insurance policy was in service. It leaves me speechless.

Didn't take your advice, I read it. One more thing for me to be upset about.

Did either one of you catch this thread http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1128080/posts. Seems like one you would be interesting in.

Oddly enough it was the liberal supremes that got this one right!?! and the "conservative" supremes voting against the rights of the people. Things keep getting stranger and stranger.

I think the Red Cross is attempting to cover all their bases. Multiple cities without coverage wouldn't be good for the population involved or the Red Cross image. Am interested in finding out what you learn when you contact them concerning this issue. Thanks for making that effort :)

Exactly right. A search warrant is issued and signed by a judge. It must state exactly what is being sought in the search. The judge was wrong. The officers were wrong to accept the blank warrant. The whole fiasco was a fishing expedition based on a "tip". The person who offered the "tip" should also face prosecution for perjury.

There are people who now reside in cemeteries because of bum "tips" and careless execution of search warrants. There are people whose property has been severely damaged by execution of search warrants at the incorrect address. Many are never compensated by the heavy handed screwups dressed as law enforcement officers.

The court is right. A law enforcement officer should bear the responsibilty for careless action. Especially when it tramples the rights of a citizen. Our local police department carries significant liability insurance to protect the city in case an officer does screw up.

Thank you. Unbelievable the libs got one right!!! What I want to know is, after Waco and Ruby Ridge, why Butch Reno and many others are not rotting in a jail cell for the unconstitutional and murderous abuses of human rights and human life [same goes for every "doctor" and mother who murders unborn human life in the womb]. May God grant mercy on our pitiful souls for allowing this to continue without fighting...literally...because our fear of the "authorities" is greater than our fear of God's rath.
