When the American Spectator would came in the mail....Ben Stein's article was the first thing I would read. His musings on his son, his wife, parents, American culture & politics along with his Hollywood experiences were so enjoyable & honest.

He's a very gifted writer who has a special way of touching my heart string.

In this au revoir to his Morton column he reminds us of what truly matters and who the real stars are!.

God Bless you & yours, Ben Stein

Yep. Even when he was obviously blinded by the glittery pleasures of hollywood, Stein's heart shone through.

Glad to see he's jettisoning the celebrity gossipy stuff. He has much too much of import to say to waste his time on that fluff.

Funny thing about my wife - she abhors celebrities. I never in a million yrs would have pegged her to do something like that. Turned out it was the right thing to do.
Go figure.

What I noticed most was how juvenile Franken acted. None of these weed heads have ever matured. It shows!

I read a book many many years ago, don't remember the title or writer, but his point I remember. This is such a magical wonder filled world we live in that boredom should be considered a sin.

But a man or woman who makes a huge wage for memorizing lines and reciting them in front of a camera is no longer my idea of a shining star we should all look up to...yeah, and those actors get to do their lines over and over until they get them right, unlike the soldier working to deactivate live munitions before they go off and kill dozens or the EMT struggling to keep the patient alive long enough to get to the emergency room - they get only one chance, and failure means lost lives - real heroism.....

RE this article about Stein reporting on the stars from Mortons: In a very odd coincidence, an old Animaniacs cartoon just now on Nickelodeon featured Ben Stein as an incredibly boring (and inescapable) essayist at a fancy restaurant filled with movie stars.

Your point is well worth remembering.

In the testing ground of only one chance. Heroics.

I really like that idea.

More firepower than we possess. America is so stuck on the damn movie business- I now refuse to watch movies or celebrities of any kind. American culture is the pits. Watching a bunch of liberal, "free thinking" idiots playing pretend in front of a camera just gets on my damn nerves.
We should all revert back to radio and books. At least with them, our imaginations are nourished.
Likewise, kudos to Ben Stein and may God bless that man. He has gotten everything correct in this last bit, his Magnum Opus, as another Freeper mentioned earlier.
And, on the comments of other Freepers...
I still want his money too. :)

Why was it ever?

I think for the longest time, because "stars" did get the attention of the media -- and therefore our attention as well, they were put on pedestals to attract further notice. We were sold a bill of goods. Today we have more "fair and balanced" ways to discern our truths. We now know what we've always suspected: The "beautiful people" are most often anything but....

In the same ways that many of us no longer falsely equate intellectual with intelligence, what we're now realizing is that one cannot demand respect simply because of a fabricated lofty perch (Barbra S. et. al.). Rather, we now recognize that one must earn our respect by his or her actions....

Ben Stein is now one I believe to be worthy of my respect.
