The drivers licence issue is bogus: Since 1949, when the United Nations sanctioned its use, the International Driver's License (IDL) has allowed International Travelers to drive freely throughout the world. They do not need US drivers licences, they just need to show their passport to get an IDL !

Garcia argues that many unlicensed immigrants drive anyway, without insurance...

So arrest then deport these baldwins. Is that such a difficult concept? (And what was Jeb thinking, anyway?)
Democrats: Yeah, but if we deport them how can we get them to vote for us?

Garcia argues that many unlicensed immigrants drive anyway, without insurance, and that licensing them would make the country's roads safer, while giving federal authorities more information about potential terrorists.
Ok, I'll bite - how will licensing people who are in fundamental violation of our laws and loathe to learn the English language so they can read pesky things like road signs and stuff going to make our roads safer?
Resistance to Garcia's bill was strong in the Legislature, even after Gov. Jeb Bush endorsed it. He surprised some observers by backing the plan, saying it would not be a reward for those who flout immigration laws, but rather an acknowledgment that people already here should not not be treated as ``lepers to society.''
Dead wrong, Jeb. They violated our laws - they have earned the right to be treated as "lepers to society." If these criminals don't deserve to be treated as the "lepers of society", how do you feel about murderers, rapists, child molesters, robbers, etc. - IOW, other criminals who have flaunted our laws?

"Garcia argues that many unlicensed immigrants drive anyway, without insurance, and that licensing them would make the country's roads safer, while giving federal authorities more information about potential terrorists." Yeah, and many rapists rape anyway and many thieves steal anyway....all without regard for the law. That is what makes them criminals. Let's try this again....ILLEGAL aliens are individuals from other countries who have no regard for our laws, therefore they are CRIMINALS. Should we start licensing sex offenders as well, rather than requiring them to register? Should we license thieves instead of jailing them? (Or maybe we could just get them jobs with the IRS or simply elect them to Congress as democRATs)

"FAIR, when lobbying in the Capitol, flashed mock Florida driver's licenses bearing the name of Sept. 11 ringleader Mohamed Atta, and handed out leaflets calling Garcia's bill a ``slap in the face to 9/11 family members.''
The leaflets did not mention that all 19 Sept. 11 hijackers entered the country legally -- with visas."
The last sentence is the most interesting to me. The writer of the news article exercised some judgment and included a fact that has strong bearing on the FAIR leaflet. In this case, although I don't believe in giving illegals driver's licenses, I think it was apt.
But how likely are you to find the reporter presenting a fact that contradicts a liberal position in a newstory?
For example, when liberal after liberal accused Bush of saying there was an "imminent threat" from Iraq, how many journalists bothered to reference Bush's State of the Union speech where he said the exact opposite? Anyone? Bueller? Anyone?

Under Garcia's bill, license applicants would have had to submit to background checks in Florida and in their home countries. The state would have relied on consular officials to verify identity and provide criminal histories from abroad. Garcia argues that many unlicensed immigrants drive anyway, without insurance, and that licensing them would make the country's roads safer, while giving federal authorities more information about potential terrorists. The sheriff's association, however, said it ''wouldn't have any confidence'' in background coming from countries that lack sophisticated criminal history databases.California would fall for this ruse hook, line, and sinker. Bump to the sheriff's association in Florida.
