During Bill's first year in the White house, Chelsea was assigned a specific sedan to ride in for a state function, as was everyone else. The driver held the door open and she backed out , turned, and said, "I won't ride in this car! There's a military man in there, and I don't ride with military men.!" The senior officer calmly got out of the car and found another vehicle to ride in. In another incident, Chelsea asked the Marine escorting her to school to wear civilian clothes in the future, not his uniform because, "My family doesn't like military people." In yet another incident, Lt. General Barry McCaffrey had been summoned to the White house. As he was leaving, he encounterd a young woman who was a member of the White house staff.
