Jeb: Give illegals driver's licenses

Florida Gov. Jeb Bush has endorsed a bill in his state's legislature that would grant driver's licenses to illegal aliens.

Bush said he favors the legislation as long as there are rigorous screening standards to ensure recipients ''won't be terrorists,'' the Miami Herald reported.

Gov. Jeb Bush

The bill would affect hundreds of thousands of people, including foreign nationals who live in Florida for part of the year.

Supporters argue it would enable people "stuck" in the long citizenship process to drive with valid licenses and insurance.

''Our roads and streets will be safer because of this,'' said Sen. Rudy Garcia, according to the Herald, noting Florida's sprawling cities virtually make a car a necessity.

By not granting the licenses, Garcia contends, the state "almost tells these folks to break the law, because that's the only way they're going to be doing anything.''

Bush said he would withdraw support if security precautions were relaxed and emphasized he was not encouraging more illegal immigration into the United States, the Herald said.

''We shouldn't allow them to come into our country to begin with,'' Bush said. "But once they're here, what do you do? Do you say that they're lepers to society? That they don't exist? It seems that a policy that ignores them is a policy of denial.''

Under the proposed law, illegal immigrants applying for a license would have to be cleared by background checks both in Florida and in their home countries, the paper said.

Last year, several other states considered easing restrictions to allow illegal aliens to drive.

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger campaigned against giving driver's licenses to illegal aliens and repealed a bill passed by outgoing Gov. Gray Davis. But as WorldNetDaily reported, the new governor has been working with a legislator to craft an new bill.

In Hawaii and Kansas new laws make it easier for illegals to get a license, and Arizona is considering a similar measure this year.

At least seven states allow anyone who pays federal income tax to use a filing ID number to obtain a license.

Guess Jeb is taking a more active role in securing Florida for his brother.

I have no problem with licenses for illegals as long as they are clearly marked as such. They should be an entirely different color and have their date of entry on them.

California law did not exclude applicants from the list of countries maintained by the U.S. Department of State as state sponsors of terrorism.

In addition, California did not require state and national criminal background checks, nor did it provide procedures in conjunction with foreign consulates to verify identity and criminal backgrounds with an applicant?s home country.

"They will have a distinct look from standard driver licenses."

Don't they have buses in Florida?

I don't wish to seem unreasonable, but I can see no compelling reason why the state should offer any sort of legitimacy to ILLEGAL aliens. That includes driver's licenses.

It may be true that Jeb wants to help his brother win Florida but Illegal means these people are law breakers and should be booted out of the country. Not rewarded with any legal status such free pass to drive.

They are lawbreakers to start with if they are here illegally.

I have no problems with lisencing illegals, if they know how to drive BUT THEY DON'T. Who will insure illegals. THEY DON'T LIVE HERE. Marvin Bush, Jeb and George's brother, had a housekeeper who let her SUV get away from her, killing her, and almost taking me out in the process, as it careened across the road -- over an embankment, and into a ditch.

Everyone knows illegals, hired to work in the US die, at TWICE the rate of their domestic counterparts, BECAUSE THEY ARE UNSKILLED. We now know that 90 percent of fatal traffic accidents happen in third world countries. Insurance companies also know this. WHO will insure illegal aliens? Illegal aliens?

If automobile insurance companies insure illegal aliens, AUTO insurance will become MORE expensive than HEALTH CARE insurance. Roads will become LESS SAFE than they are. Criminals, the unskilled, and the uninsured, will be FREE to roam them.

I say we outsource the governorship of Florida next. Foreigners couldn't come up with a much worse decision on this matter.

Brilliant! And lets be sure to clearly mark them as Class IIII Criminal Law Breakers License. Of course for people in our country illegally that want to haul dangerous material, they'll need a special endorsement license for their illegal status.

Good idea!

Well if he's wrong he deserves all he gets in return.

Following the Bush logic, I'm beginning to wonder if Kerry isn't right...Terrorism really isn't that big a threat.

I'll bet legal or illegal you can't get a Florida drivers license without a Social Security card either...

So let's see, a drivers license AND a Social Security card, then you got AMNESTY!

Wonderful! Our elected officials can sign-off on this too. Sign it into law immediately.
