Reclaiming pro-lifers
The Washington Times ^ | March 29, 2004 | Nat Hentoff

Quiet as it's kept, the diminishing Democratic majority in Congress for the past quarter of a century equals the rate at which pro-life Democrats have been abandoning the party. This was the message given to Terry McAuliffe, head of the Democratic National Committee (DNC), when he was visited on March 8 by members of Congress on the National Advisory Board of Democrats for Life of America. Among them were Reps. Bart Stupak of Michigan and James Oberstar of Minnesota.

I have always liked Nat. I just can't stomach going to the Village Voice to read him. Nice to see him somewhere else.

Good article. And the other side of the coin is that Republicans have gained by being pro-life. The party pros still haven't caught up with that, but it's true. Except in a few very liberal parts of the country, pro-abort Republicans don't do as well as pro-life Republicans. The country-clubbers have caused endless problems for the party with their stupid and selfish big-tent nonsense.

Even in the case of someone like Arnold Schwarzenegger, he wasn't elected because he was pro-abort, he was elected in spite of being pro-abort. But Emily's List doesn't give a dime to any Republicans, and staunch pro-aborts never vote Republican.

Presumably Nat reads FR ~ so it's as good a place as any to ask him why Democrats should care at all about the hard-core, pro-abortionist stance of the Democratic party.

Their position is consistent with the other elements of fascist thinking they've dredged up from time to time with any legislative program put forward. For example you can always count on the Democrats to be the ones asking for draconian sentences for any doctor to make a mistake on a government form if the federales are going to pay part of her fee.

The Democrats consistently take the position in every legislative question that corporations are going to cheat, lie and harm people. At the same time the Democrats always presume that no employee of a government agency is goin gto cheat, lie, steal and harm people!

That the Democrats like to kill babies should not be a surprise to anybody, and the faster the pro-lifers get out of that gang the better off the whole country will be.

The Washington Times is a good newspaper, well worth the reading.

They even gave column space to Hillary Clinton, until it became embarrassingly obvious that in attempting to seem fair, she really had nothing to say. After that, she polished her "listening" skills.

Yes I have always enjoyed reading the WT. It is a good newspaper. I don't read it as much. No time.

If you are committed to killing millions of babies, how can you allow "dialogue" or "diversity" in your party--it means tolerating the presence of people who think you are a mass murderer!

They can't offend the two biggest public employee unions, the NEA and AFSCME, IIRC.

I think it will be more a function of time and the grim reaper, especially on the ethnic Catholics that survived the Depression. My mom was born in 1917, goes to Mass every Sunday, always voted as far as I know except 2000, when she was still recovering from bilateral knee replacement, and always voted for the rats.

GOP, Party Platform Renewing Family and Community

As a country, we must keep our pledge to the first guarantee of the Declaration of Independence.  That is why we say the unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed.  We support a human life amendment to the Constitution and we endorse legislation to make clear that the Fourteenth Amendment’s protections apply to unborn children.  Our purpose is to have legislative and judicial protection of that right against those who perform abortions.  We oppose using public revenues for abortion and will not fund organizations which advocate it.  We support the appointment of judges who respect traditional family values and the sanctity of innocent human life.

Our goal is to ensure that women with problem pregnancies have the kind of support, material and otherwise, they need for themselves and for their babies, not to be punitive towards those for whose difficult situation we have only compassion.  We oppose abortion, but our pro-life agenda does not include punitive action against women who have an abortion.  We salute those who provide alternatives to abortion and offer adoption services, and we commend congressional Republicans for expanding assistance to adopting families and for removing racial barriers to adoption.  The impact of those measures and of our Adoption and Safe Families Act of 1997 has been spectacular.  Adoptions out of foster care have jumped forty percent and the incidence of child abuse and neglect has actually declined.   We second Governor Bush’s call to make permanent the adoption tax credit and expand it to $7,500.

An essential part of a culture that respects life is integration and inclusion of persons with disabilities.  That is the goal of Governor Bush’s New Freedom Initiative, a comprehensive agenda for the breakthrough research and practical assistance that can help individuals with disabilities live independently, hold jobs, and take part in the daily life of their communities.  We applaud his proposal, and we salute congressional Republicans for the way they have protected access to health care for individuals with disabilities against the administration’s attempts to ration it.  We pledge continued vigilance in that regard, especially in Medicare and Medicaid.

The Republican Party platform is Pro lIfe, the dems are pro abortion, the Libertarian Party pro choice. Seems to me that Nat is the guy that needs to exercise the Reagan right to let your feet do the walking.

Make sure your mother is all tied up with a perpetual novena next election day. It'll be good for her soul and great for the Republicans, and that's a combination that's hard to beat!

How does that Chines proverb go, it's better to be quiet and let other people think you're a fool, than to open your mouth and confirm it?

"How does that Chines proverb go..."

"Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak and remove all doubt."

But I don't think it's Chinese. Ensign Chekov assures me it's Russian...

'... the question of a former Democrat who told the Democrats for Life of America: "Why has the Republican Party been allowed to hijack the Democratic Party on the issue?" ' Why? Because the democrat party leadership right down to the grassroots believes in serial killing as enlightened social policy ... and they know well that this bloody rite is killing more blacks per capita than any other race. It's democrat population control, don'tcha know! It's murder and its okay with democrat leaders and democrat blind partisan voters. The Pubbies didn't have to highjack an issue, the dnc chose to defend the indefensible and spin it as enlightenment.

I note that it doesn't mention what Terry McCauliffe's response was. Probably, "What, you mean we haven't yet gotten rid of all you fascist pro-lifers yet?". Actually, aside from Ray Flynn, whom I admire for sticking to his principles, I didn't know there were any pro-life Democrats left at all.

The Republican Party platform is Pro lIfe, the dems are pro abortion, the Libertarian Party pro choice.

The Libertarian Party basically believes in limited government and the original intent of the Constitution. They advocate for liberty and against its restriction. They certainly don't want taxpayers picking up the tab for abortions or any other unnecessary function of government.

The only liberties for which the rats advocate are abortion, perverted lifestyles, multiculturalism and spending other peoples money.

If I lived in another state I could see myself registering and voting Libertarian, even though I can't approve of allowing abortions. There are many pubbies and others in the pro-life camp who approve of gun control. In this world, the Second Amendment is my loadstone. As it is while I still live in NY, I'm registered as a Conservative to try to anchor all the RINOs here.
