I can tell you, as a State Department officer, that it's there and it's real. Poundstone, skimming through some of your posts gives me hope for the future. You say you're involved with immigration at the State Department.
Please keep up the good work. Our nation's very survival is in the balance both at a cultural and a physical security level. It seems you can and are making a difference; I hope there are going to be many more like you soon.

I would say that Secretary Powell is as revered a leader as any Secretary of State since I joined the Foreign Service, well over 20 years ago. The current battle over WMD in Iraq hasn't affected the way people at State feel about him, in my observation. At worst, I think some might feel Powell was supplied with weak intel. But there are plenty of others (including me) who frankly don't care about Iraqi WMD; we just feel the US needed to take down Saddam's regime and now was the time to do it.

So when is Powell going to stop his teenaged girl googoogaagaa lovefest with Saudi princes, and stop being impressed by them and stop covering up for the Saudis in their role in the Attacks on America?
Or is that a totally taboo topic?
Don't the people at State feel revolted at the blatant nature with which the Saudis have so much power in America?

Thanks for the ping. Well thought out article.
Administration needs a fullcourtpress propounding its case and not let the terms of the debate be defined by others.
