And what is up with this fascination with the Kennedys?! Give me a break! Didn't the father used to be a rum runner or something

Kennedy was worse than a rum runner... he was Ambassador (for the American people) to England who didn't think democracy could/should be defended.

Joseph Kennedy, an Anti-Semite, did not want the US to get involved in WWII. He supported Chamberlain and appeasement, and felt democracy was doomed in England and perhaps in the US.

"Now I tell you when this thing is finally settled, " Kennedy declared, " and it comes to a question of saving what's left for England, it will be the Queen and not any of the politicians who will do it. She's got more brains than the Cabinet.

"It's partly because she wasn't born into the Royal Family. Her background is of the people. She's an omnivorous reader. Daladier told me, after he'd first met her, that she knew more about French history than almost any Frenchman."[snip]

"Democracy is finished in England. It may be here. Because it comes to a question of feeding people. It's all an economic question. I told the President in the White House last Sunday, 'Don't send me 50 admirals and generals. Send me a dozen real economists.'

"It's the loss of foreign trade that's going to threaten to change our form of government. We haven't felt the pinch of it yet. It's ahead of us."

Joe Kennedy, loved discussing politics with his children around the dinner table.

What crazy ideas did they pick up from him?

  1. Knowing French history, better than the French do, is important if you want to lead a non-French country.
  2. Democracy cannot be defended against powerful dictators--give up the battle before anyone gets killed.

These were thoughts of Joseph Kennedy, who loved discussing politics around the family dinner table.

I wonder if Kerry sat in on any of the Kennedy family dinner discussions...

Kerry values French connections and a wimpish attitude.
