Part of homeschooling is staying below the radar. This article does not help the cause.

At 4% of the student population, home educators are almost to the point where they are too big to hide: the system will come after us no matter what we do.

At 10% it will be open warfare.

Look for modified SATs and No Child Left Behind attitude testing to be the key tools used against home education. I will be preparing our kids to learn the answers the Statists want. They are very clear that when they go to the university the system will make it neccessary for them to operate as if they were spies in an enemy camp.

Excuse me! With as bright as your kids are, I don't think you have much to worry about ;-)!!

I want my girls to be just like them!

I homeschooled my daughter for four years and then sent her on to a good private high school where she has exceeded our wildest hopes in both academic and sports/social concerns.

At first while home schooling we were chased by the local school district in various ways. I then enrolled her in the public school's summer school foreign language classes, since one of the reasons we homescooled her was that she could not get foreign language in the 5th grade even though she had three years of spanish prior. Well, when she took Spanish III in the summer of fifth grade and had to take over as teacher in the class, it was funny and dangerous. Many of the students who knew her started asking if they could homeschool to their parents and to the school. It got quite embarrassing for the school district and they left us alone ever since.

Good private schools seem to have abandoned the SAT in favor of the ACT.

I have heard that universities actually like homeschool students- they realize they're getting a better educated student.

Geez, Carrie:

When homeshcooled kid #1 got to 'university', she was Miss Popularity...someone other kids could count on to help with calculus and English; a rock of emotional stability and reason in whom they could confide and obtain counsel. She was a superstar, humble and admired.

She's a commissioned officer, now, at the military academy, completing post-grad stuff; and on a recent training cruise she was charged with managing testosterony cadets in the bars and streets of Costa Rica and other ports. She's 5'4, but can muster the courage and savvy to get in the middle of a bar fight to diffuse it, wrangle football-sized dudes with liquor-induced bad attitudes, and negotiate with the local constabulary all at the same time. Successfully.

The girl is a bedrock Christian, too. (cutie, I might add).

I think in the real world, when stuff counts, the homeschoolers do just fine. Better than most, in fact. Your honing of your kids' character will be all the armor they require. They will recognized evil, and sidestep it: no running away. If necessary, they will confront and triumph. Honest. Don't worry!

Homeschoolers are exempt from No Child Left Behind testing. States which try to foist it on homeschoolers soon learn from HSLDA.org that they can lose federal funding for their public schools if they pursue the matter.

In fact, homeschooling exemption from testing is probably the only good thing about No Child Left Behind.
