Internet "Terrorist" Using Yahoo to Recruit 600 Muslims for Hack Attack

February 28, 2004

by Jeremy Reynalds

Editor's note: MND is uncomfortable providing direct links to potential terrorist groups. The links below have been edited to prevent collection by linkbots, but the edits should be obvious to human readers.

One of the internet's most verbally prolific Islamic "terrorists" is now advocating hacking sites which oppose his radical views.

In an e-mail on his Yahoo Groups site titled "Half Moon Operation/First Attack," Daleel Almojahid asks for people to register to another Yahoo group called Jehad-Op. This for the purpose of attacking Internet Haganah, an increasingly successful web site dedicated to closing down terrorist web sites – which among other things provide an avenue for terrorists to communicate as well as a means of encouragement for radical Islamics devoted to terrorism.

In his message Almojahid writes "We need at least 600 Muslims for this jihad ... First of all many ... Muslims may note that many jihad sites have been attacked and closed ... all of them have been attacked from one source – it's internet-haganah ...(which) means in English ‘defense.'

This site is against Islamic jihad sites around the world and every day adds a database for new Islamic site to ... attack. So, this message (is) to every Muslim (who) cares about his religion. To help us attack Haganah site we need Muslim hackers who have a good background about hack(ing). Also any Muslim can help us without the need to be good in hack(ing) just by using DOS command or some simple software. Please don't forget to spread this message to your friends and Islamic forum groups etc."

According to Almojahid, the first target will be www. internet-haganah.us, because as he comments, "it's in the first rank of Google search engine, so it (has) the most visitors than others."

Almojahid says the time for the attack is not yet certain. It will depend on how quickly 600 Muslims sign up for service. He then provides comprehensive instructions on hacking.

Almojahid's message appears to have been posted from the computer system of the American University of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates.

The same message posted on the Yahoo Group Jehad-Op. by a different individual (http://groups.yahoo.com(slash)group/jehad-op/message/7) appears to originate from Amman, Jordan.

Terror researcher Johnathan Galt has reported the apparent illegal use of the American University of Sharjah's computer system to school authorities and the existence of both Yahoo sites to the company's abuse department.

In an e- mail to Yahoo, Galt wrote "There is a lot of illegal activity being facilitated by Yahoo Groups services. The most egregious of them all is the Yahoo Group Global Islamic Media with over 6200 members which discusses imminent terror attacks on the USA. On Feb.11th the Yahoo Group Mojahedoon instructed its members on how to inject concentrated cyanide into supermarket foodstuffs. There are many other groups such as this! Will innocent people die before Yahoo takes action and enforces (its terms of service?"

Galt added, "This looks like this Yahoo Group (Jehad Op) is established for only one reason -- to coordinate the carrying out of cyber-attacks using 'EvilPing', DDoS, etc.. If you show the source of the message you can see the IP address of the sender (which traces to an ISP in Jordan). Also, ‘jhon navathi' <thunders_of_truth(AT)y...> is probably a Yahoo email."

In a subsequent group message (http://groups.yahoo.com(slash)group/Daleel_Almojahid_1/message/35), Almojahid (who frequently provides commentary from a radical Islamic perspective), again dismissed rumors that Osama bin Laden has been captured by the United States.

He wrote, "We have information that the Americans are preparing a movie to show you that Shaik Osama Bin Laden is captured and they will use this movie to make people believe that he is captured, so watch out because we know (for sure) that this plan has been prepared and will be put into action very close to the elections."

Almojahid added, "You will be hearing a lot of crap in the coming few weeks and months till the election. This is one of these craps. Shaikh Osama Bin Laden, may God protect him and bless him and the rest of the mojahideen, is fine and fighting with everything he has against the kingdoms of evil."

Yahoo Abuse Department,

I want to report illegal activity facilitated by your network.

Look at 'jehad-op' with 21 members. Only 2 messages, and the first one has been deleted.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/jehad-op/message/2

This looks like this Yahoo Group is established for only one reason -- to coordinate the carrying out of cyber-attacks using 'EvilPing', DDoS, etc..  If you show the source of the message you can see the IP address of the sender (which traces to and ISP in Jordan).  Also, "jhon navathi" <thunders_of_truth@y...> is probably a Yahoo email.

Can you investigate this group and report the HTTP Referrers for the site?  It's obvious that the group is linked to some hacker group.

Internet Haganah

The following websites are being used to organize a criminal action, namely a distributed denial of service attack. Information regarding the sites, who runs them and who hosts them and/or provides them with network services, is provided so that the responsible parties may be held accountable for any damage done. We will add to this list as time allows and new sites involve themselves in this activity. These sites are in addition to Al Ansar, whose actions we have noted previously and the Yahoo group that has been established for the purpose of support "operation crescent."

Reminds me of the idiot Chinese "Honkers" who threatened to hack American systems during the spyplane incident some years ago. Turned out to be nothing but a bunch of anklebiters who couldn't hack their way out of a wet paper bag.

All that "cyberwar" turned out to be was the digital equivalent of two dogs bent on being the last to mark a fire hydrant. If it hadn't been for a bunch of Chicken Little media types hyping the whole thing up, nobody would have noticed.

It's obvious that the group is linked to some hacker group.

Hacker groups don't use Yahoo. True hackers run their own systems and maintain their own mailing lists. They don't trust third parties to have their privacy concerns in mind.

Better to keep these wankers where they can be watched and identified.

The Chinese hackers actually did launch some attacks, the one I remember is they trashed the DFW Airport website. However, soon after they started, American hackers went on the offensive and kicked their commie butts so bad the Chinese hackers had to give up. They couldn't stop the Americans hackers from destroying their systems.

IIRC, it wasn't just the American hackers. The Hong Kong Blondes helped them do some of the most serious damage.

They aren't even positive, kind, or decent among themselves.

Yep, I tried to report them over a week ago to Yahoo abuse but heard diddly-squat back from them.

Any Freepers live near Sunnyvale, CA? Perhaps we could arrange a personal visit. Get an appointment and talk with Yahoo's head of security -- with several printouts of stuff from Yahoo sites and groups to show him.

I don't think I made myself clear. The ones who use Yahoo are not the ones worth watching.

Well la-tee-freakin'-dah. Hitting a web site is not even remotely on par with hitting the core systems. That's like hitting the DoD web site and then claiming you breached national security. It's a fool's claim. Anyone with a lick of sense knows better.

However, soon after they started, American hackers went on the offensive and kicked their commie butts so bad the Chinese hackers had to give up.

Nope. What actually happened is that the Chinese "honkers" outnumbered the American hackers with a defacement hit rate far beyond the Americans. The main reason the whole tit-for-tat ended was because both sides ran out of low hanging fruit to hit and then it became painfully apparent to all in attendance that we weren't dealing with "Uber-hackers," but ankle-biting scriptkiddies.

Sorry...I was there. And the reality isn't even close to what you claim.

Sorry, I was sleep deprived and was unclear myself. The Yahoo users are probably just fantasizers and wannabees, but at least they have a controllable outlet for their fantasies...and might be still worth watching, since it is so easy.

Has it occured to anyone that this might be a "sting" to law-enforcement identify potential terrorists wannabees? Just a thought, since it seems foolish for schooled terrorists to use Yahoo in such an open manner.
