Testimony of Ex-Gays for Ohio's Defense of Marriage Act

Posted by Carlos Lopez Tuesday, February 24, 2004

Ohio recently passed a strong Defense of Marriage Act that rejects same-sex marriages and civil unions in that state. Among those testifying effectively on behalf of the act were Greg and Cheryl Quinlan, former homosexuals now married and working to guide others out of homosexuality. Greg's testimony is reprinted from the online bulletin distributed free to subscribers by the organization, Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays & Gays.

~~o~~

Mr. Chairman and members of the Senate Finance and Financial Institutions Committee, thank you for the opportunity to testify on the Defense of Marriage Act for Ohio.

I am Greg Quinlan and this is my beautiful wife, Cheryl.

I left the homosexual lifestyle over eleven years ago. My wife Cheryl did the same over four years ago.

Homosexuality is a clinical developmental gender-identity disorder. There is quantitative scientific research on the subject and thousands of individual case studies that prove, that individuals with homosexual ideations can and have changed through clinical therapy and counseling. There is no biological evidence--not one repeatable study, not a single genetic test--that gives any validity to homosexual behavior as a ''born'' trait. No one is born GAY. No one! Homosexuality is an emotional disorder, a pathology that can be, and has been, effectively changed when a person is highly motivated to change.

Both my wife and I are victims of child abuse. We are the products of a pop culture that regards human beings as a commodity for one another’s gratification, disrespecting the rights ''endowed by their creator of life liberty and the pursuit of happiness.'' We know firsthand that being ''GAY'' is not being happy, but it is a lifestyle that leaves you broken and empty.

Large numbers of homosexuals have had severe emotional trauma early in life, such as the loss of a parent through death or divorce, sexual abuse, or some other upheaval.

As a nurse, I watched 100 of my friends and acquaintances die of AIDS and AIDS-related illnesses. After that, I stopped counting. The devastation of homosexual behavior, the cumulative effect that this behavior has brought and continues to bring, is incalculable.

I lived over nine years of my life as a homosexual. In my attempt to justify being GAY, I founded the Dayton Committee for the Human Rights Campaign Fund in 1989, raising thousands of dollars for the nation's largest homosexual organization.

As a volunteer for HRCF (as it was called then), I lobbied Ohio’s Congressional delegation both at home and in Washington D.C. several times a year. I helped gain the successful passage, along with others, of the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Ryan White AIDS Act, the Breast and Cervical Cancer Reduction Act, and other legislation of interest to the homosexual culture.

But in 1998 I founded Pro-Family Network. This network is a Christian Family Advocacy organization fighting for the civil liberties of the unborn and for biblical Christian believers.

Also during this time I started--with the help of my pastor’s wife--Living Free Ministries, a ministry at Solid Rock Church in Monroe, Ohio. Living Free Ministries helps those wanting to leave the homosexual lifestyle by dealing with the issues that brought them to gender-identity confusion. We have helped scores of people to follow the Manufacturer’s guidelines for successful living.

So what does all of this have to do with the Defense of Marriage Act for Ohio? Everything!

Homosexuals represent only 1% to 3% of the general population--but not the10% claimed by Alfred Kinsey (a documented fraud) and the Kinsey Sex Institute that bears his name. Therefore it is impossible not to discuss Same-Sex Attraction Disorder (SSAD) when discussing this issue.

One of the most obvious examples of the gender-identity disorder known as Homosexuality happened in the 123rd General Assembly with a failed attempt by Rep. Otto Beatty to expand Ohio's Ethnic Intimidation Law to include sexual orientation. Two individuals testified. They were men, dressed in women’s clothing, taking on the names of women. They claimed they were born in the wrong bodies. Before that Criminal Justice Committee was the clinical walking and talking evidence of severe gender identity confusion. But some members of that committee in the 123rd General Assembly encourage that confusion with sympathy instead of empathy.

Tens of thousands of homosexuals have changed and more desire to change. Homosexuality is a behavior--not a genetic trait. Based on verifiable evidence, there is no justification for same sex marriage, civil unions, or domestic partnership legislation. None.

My wife and I are living proof--along with thousands of others--that persons with same-sex attraction can, and have, changed--and thereby can marry and be happy again.

We have chosen to follow the Manufactures’ specific guidelines for our lives. That means committed to one another as man and woman.

Remember Vermont, whose state motto is ''Don’t Tread on Me.'' Well, with Paul Bunyon-like boots, Vermont’s Supreme Court tread on the entire nation. The Vermont Supreme Court’s decision, in spite of over two hundred years of American history, suddenly found that its state constitution allows for gay marriage or domestic partnership. I am really curious, how did they miss that for two hundred years!

Now a Massachusetts court has arrogantly instructed its legislature, in a complete reversal of powers, to change its laws regarding marriage. Four Massachusetts black-robed ''justices'' suddenly found that their state constitution allowed for gay marriage. Now how did Massachusetts with over 350 years of common law and 225 years of constitutional law overlook the right of homosexuals to marry?

The Congress of the United States, in response to the homosexual tactics in Hawaii, which were then threatening the nation with same sex marriage, passed the national Defense of Marriage Act, signed into law by President Clinton, allowing the states to protect their citizens from the assault on marriage by the homosexual lobby.

Ohio must defend her citizens by defending marriage, not by enabling the disorder of homosexuality.

Homosexuality is a Gender Identity Disorder--a disorder that can be put in order when an individual really wants to order his or her life according to the Manufacturer’s design.

The State of Ohio must not become an enabler of this disorder. The policy of the State of Ohio should be to help those willing to be helped, not promote a lifestyle choice that is now and is historically a self-destructive dead end.

While still a gay man in 1989, in the Washington D.C. ballroom of the Park Hyatt Hotel, listened to the gay political strategists of HRCF discuss where to begin the fight to legalize gay marriage. They chose Hawaii first, then Vermont.

You, the members of the Finance and Financial Institutions Committee, have a responsibility not to enable self-destructive behavior.

Thank you,

Gregory and Cheryl Quinlan www.profamilynetwork.org pfn@profamilynetwork.org

Good to see Ex gay people campaigning for Marriage, just as George W. Bush is doing.

This is something I have only seen on the internet. I have never heard any mention of the fact that people can change mentioned on "main stream" media.

Has anyone ever heard of Ex gays on the "lame stream" media?

Nope. And we won't hear this in the mainstream media. Also, they're 150% correct. It's strictly a behavioral disorder. It ain't genetic. I never bought into that. Even when I was a lib.

Such blasphemy is considered hate speech.

The scary thing is so many people, especially educated ones, buy into this genetic argument even though no evidence exists for it. I can almost buy into there being some genetic component, but so many people insist that it is purely genetics, which is ludicrous based on all research in the subject.

Judges who go along with redefining the word marriage might just as easily throw out any discrimination between men and women.

ERA supporters must be very happy with the liberal judges at this point.

With the way the judges are ruling (and refusing to rule) it's turning out that ERA supporters don't need an amendment to support their causes.

I'll bet this is happening now because the Left if afraid Bush will get his justices.

It has to be behavioral. It's always harder to do the right thing, no matter what the circumstances. Genetics is basically justifying immoral behavior as right. It still isn't right no matter how you slice it, dice it, cut it, or mince it.

Same example holds out for cheating on your spouse. Saying that an individual cheats because of a genetic predisposition is ridiculous. But you get the point.

That is sooo funny!
I was at my very liberal sister-in-law's house on the weekend. She stated, "People are born gay."
I said, "OH REALLY?!?!"
"Oh yes", she stated, "There are families that have more gay siblings than others."
I said, "That proves envirorment, not genetics. Explain to me identical twins that have two sexual orientations."
She changed the subject.

I have a sister who had two husbands, four kids then decided she was lesbian. Genetics are BS!

No. There will now be at least 38 opportunities to repeat this testimony in state legislatures.

Homosexuals advocate groups. (Human Rights Coalition) must be in a panic over this. This man was testifing about feelings, you can't fight feelings! (turnabout is fair play)

This is a good debate. Once that concerns every mother and concerns every father. (ever see the commercial for the homostat pill on SNL. PC thought through drugs)

This is going to force kerry to be pro homosexual marriage with his vote. Check, closing on check mate.

The ones who get me are the guys who have kids, then switch.

Forgive my bluntness, but how does a man (supposedly) born with the attraction to other men hardwired into his brain and body, managed to become, ahem, shall we say, interested enough in the opposite sex to perform the requisite function to produce children.

But then, what do I know? Heavens to betsy, I'm a republican AND a Roman Catholic. Hardly the most enlightened combination.

One of my old high school history teachers did this...once his youngest graduated from college, he ditched his wife and proclaimed himself gay (this was a few years after I finished high school). In retrospect, there were a few slightly "off" statements and behaviors that he made while I was a student, but he certainly seemed like a devoted husband and father. He was a great teacher, but I cannot respect a man who does this to his family after almost 30 years of marriage.

I just can't comprehend how people decide in the middle of their life to bat for the other team, as it were.

Homosexual Agenda Ping!

There ARE many ex-"gays" and the media REPRESSES this vital information. The media are the minions and sycophants of the "gay" acitivists, who desire to destroy the moral foundation of civilization.

If the media had a tiny shred of honesty, they would tell stories such as above.

Let me know if you want on/off this ping list.

It's the attraction that gets me.

I mean, if you've got the hots for guys, how does a woman arouse you enough to 'perform.'

I just don't get it...

That's why, to me, this guys position (that it's a mental disorder, thus curable) makes a bit more sense.

Oh, well.
