I was reading somewhere that the damaging EMP from a normal nuclear device would be limmited to a distance of only a few miles from the blast. even 5 miles out you might be ok. What is your take on that?

From what I can see it depends on the height of the detonation.
This page says that an air burst will send an EMP pulse out to the horizon. I'm not sure what a ground burst would do, but I imagine it would depend on the yield of the bomb.
