That's funny! I had over $18,000.00 worth of trees planted last spring by a local landscaper. When I met him he had three helpers....all english speaking and clean cut. He shows up the day to start digging with like 8 or 10 people who looked like they've been sleeping in cardboard boxes for a week ot two. None of them spoke a word of English. Since one of my best friends was driven out of business the previous year because he steadfastly refused toi hire illegals, this kinda hit home. Well, landscaping guy had two trailers loaded with trees......so I asked him "Hey....am I paying American prices"? He looked at me funny and said "yes". I told him he had three hours to go find some Americans to dig holes in my lawn, otherwise this contract (which I had in my hand) was going to be turned into confetti....and any money he WOULD have gotten from me would be sucked up by lawyers fees! I told him the only other option he had was to reduce the price of the labor charges by 2/3rds.....needless to say, he wasn't too happy with me.
He was back in less than an hour with an American crew.

To those of you peeps who think I'm racist, screw you. It's still somewhat of a free country...an if I feel like standing up for fellow Americans, I'll do it every darned time!

Good for you. I applaud what you did!

(You raise a very good point, too. We're not saving money because of illegals. Employers might be saving money by hiring them, but they're not passing on those savings to us. I'm convinced of it.)

I think the government should print up forms for homeowners and business owners, to insure that any landscaping or contracting work done is done by tax paying citizens, forms we can easily download from the internet to ward off shoddy, uninsurable work.

Had a huge remodel done last year and I was prepared to send away any contractor who showed up with Illegals. Only had to once with the fencing contractor. Like your situation, when they came to take the measurements all were clean cut types. Then when the crew showed up to put fencing and gates not one could speak english. I called the fence company and the owner came straight over with another crew.
