The Democratic Strategy. Kerry reaps benefit of months of Bush-bashing.

Surely you're not surprised that the Bush White House is beginning to move into high campaign mode. What should surprise you is that it took them so long.

Waiting until now has cost the president some popular support and has led to a spate of polls suggesting that Democratic frontrunner John Kerry would win the White House if the election were held today. That's all insanely speculative, of course. But there is evidence to suggest that Democrats have done some significant damage to the president's position.

In a Gallup poll released this week, which found Bush's job approval rating to be 51 percent, the number of Americans who believe the economy is declining is greater than it was just a few months ago. When asked last December, "What do you think is the most important problem facing this country today?" 32 percent of those polled named economic problems. Of them, ten percent said jobs, and 17 percent said the economy in general. But when asked the same question last week, 46 percent said economic problems. Of them, 20 percent said jobs, and 21 percent said the economy in general.

To take another example: When asked in early January whether economic conditions in the country were getting better or worse, 66 percent said better, and 27 percent said worse. Asked the same question last week, 53 percent said better, and 40 percent said worse.

Now, the economy has not taken a turn for the worse in the last four weeks. It is, in fact, growing at a reasonably healthy rate. On a net basis, jobs are not being lost; they are being created. In other words, the news is simply not bad. So what accounts for the recent changes in the public's perception?

Could it be that some Americans began to view the economy more negatively at about the same time they began to tune in to the Democratic race for president?

Back in September, the candidates — all nine of them — could bash George Bush all they wanted and almost no one outside the political class noticed. But now, more and more voters are watching. The television networks are covering the Democratic race more intensively. And viewers are seeing a continuous loop of attacks on the president.

Just look at the most recent candidates' debate in Wisconsin. Kerry attacked Bush on jobs. John Edwards attacked Bush on jobs. Howard Dean attacked Bush on jobs. Dennis Kucinich attacked Bush on jobs. And Al Sharpton attacked Bush on jobs. (By the way, in case you missed it, the Reverend Al was at his very best on the issue, when he said, "I think we bring the jobs back, one, by canceling NAFTA two, by creating manufacturing jobs, three...by creating jobs." Now that's a jobs program.)

The day after the debate, Kerry even used Bush's visit to the Daytona 500 as an opportunity to attack Bush on jobs. "We don't need a president who just says, 'Gentlemen, start your engines," Kerry said Monday. "We need a president who says, 'America, let's start our economy and put people back to work.'"

Is it any wonder that Americans, listening to it all, think the jobs situation is getting worse?

Most comparisons of George W. Bush to his father, the first President Bush, are off the mark, but this does seem reminiscent of 1992, when Bill Clinton ousted the president's father by citing a health-care "crisis" that was not, in fact, a crisis.

The brilliance of today's Democratic strategy is that they have so far been able to use a single economic factor, employment, to convey the (incorrect) idea that the economy as a whole is in trouble. This week the Washington Post seemed to sense the problem with the Democrats' position when it reported that improvements in the economy as a whole may influence voters' choices more than anxiety about jobs.

"The booming housing market has given even struggling workers the ability to latch onto a tangible talisman of personal progress," reporter Jonathan Weisman wrote. "Wage growth has been nearly stagnant, but thanks to Bush's tax cuts, disposable income has risen. And after nine quarters of slow but steady growth, the economy as a whole is poised to take off, giving some shaky households a sense of optimism about the coming year."

That doesn't even mention that gains in the stock market, with the Dow above 10,500, allow millions of people to feel optimistic about their 401k investments.

Given all that good news, the lesson of the new Gallup poll is: Bush-bashing works. Say something over and over and over again, and get the media to repeat it over and over and over again, and some people will begin to believe it, even if it conflicts with their own experiences. Which suggests that George W. Bush better kick his campaign into high gear — right now.

This is Bush "rope-a-dope". Let the Rats climb out on that limb, let them get more and more outrageous... Let them put more and more chips on the table. I'll bet there's more shock and awe coming. If I were working with Karl Rove, I'd have been planning it since January 2000.

I've rather enjoyed listening to this one-sided conversation. All the childish emotion has just revealed the level of irrelevancy promoted by the DNC. They've been reduced to recycling the same conversation over and over. And that there has been little RNC response is driving them crazy. I hope W stays the course and waits until the nominee is selected. Can you say PUNK'D?

Apart from Secretary of State and a few other positions, just what does the President have to do with the employment rate?

I have one question for John F'ing Kerry to answer.

Just how do you intend to create jobs?

The President's numbers are holding steady in spite of the attacks. This means that the public is smarter and the media is frustrated because they are losing their grip on public mind control.

The media is also painting themselves into a corner that is labeled "Liberal biased" to such a degree, that it is doubtful they will be able to reverse the trend that they have created for themselves.

This is by far, the best situation that the Democrats will ever have from here on out, under the circumstances, the Presidents numbers should be much lower than what they currently are and the Democrats know it. People are also becoming skeptical about these so called "polls" because the results have varied back and forth contradicting the outcome. The public sees them as a media tool to manipulate voter opinion to favor their candidate and nothing more.

The President simply has to wait until the primaries are over and the Democrat spin machine runs out of gas. They went into high gear way too fast and too soon. The Republicans are waiting for the right moment to call the wrecker and haul them to the junk yard where they belong.

I saw the poll referenced in the above article on Drudge. BUT, I also saw another poll on Drudge. A Zogby poll showing Bush winning decisively in all the "red" states and trailing by slim margins in the Blue states. This means, of course, that victories in the red states guarentees four more years.

The media continue to ignore the electoral college. Why is it important if Kerry wins every vote in New York or California - the electors only vote once. Bush could lose the popular vote, again, and would still be legitimately elected.

Hold you fire till you see the whites of their eyes

In the RAT's case, it should read, HOLD YOUR FIRE TILL YOU SEE THE WHITES OF THEIR LIES!

Let us take this back to the early days in which John Kerry was refining his eventual run for the White House. As a resume enhancement of the time (1968), it was good politics to serve as an officer, preferably the Navy. John Kerry really had little intention of being deployed to a forward area, that was an error of self-placement. He was a lover, not a fighter, and it was bad judgment on the part of superior officers to order him to river patrol. John was thrown in the position of having to look good in front of the men, and this may have propelled him to chase the hapless wounded Viet Cong behind the hut, and grease him there. It is not known if John took any body trophies, a practice he freely attributed to other GIs in Viet Nam, as he reported this sort of thing was pretty widespread. You know, like the cutting off of ears, or fingers, or genitals. Of the 200,000 or so Vietnamese civilians the rampaging US troops over there were killing every year, there HAD to be a lot of that going on. At least we have this on good authority from John himself.

Let's see.

Kerry is only even or slightly ahead.

This is after uncountered barrages from the nine Democrats, plus all the satellite screed-merchants like MoveOn.org.

Yet, Bush continues to out-fundraise Kerry, who is spending his money, while Bush isn't.

Kerry, as the one who came from off the radar screen after Howard Dean chewed his own leg off, also hasn't been vetted by the average voter-- he's just the latest name getting attention.

Meanwhile, the Rats are playing their cards, which should be old news by the time election day rolls around, while all the dirty laundry about Kerry just builds up in the laundry basket.

It looks to me like it's just a matter of letting the water rise and keeping your powder dry-- then, when the time is right, you can overwhelm the opposition with greater resources, greater ammunition, and greater reserves.

And that's not to mention, every time a good economic post comes out, their support gets whittled away a little more. The next job report will be a pretty good indicator of the amount of ground Bush will be able to close, and how soon.

Overall, the situation is not dire, and the advantages continue to accrue to the Good Guys....I think I'm staying cautioously optimistic.

It was clear that this was the dem strategy when they began the new campaign 2.5 years before the next election. I wrote about it then, that the point was complicity between the media and the dems to enable the media to broadcast negative information against the president with impunity by calling it "news."

In the future, it will probably be necessary to counteract this strategy by running a real republican primary

Primaries weaken incumbents. Bush is keeping his powder dry, nothing to worry about. Kerry's negatives will be rising exponentially in short order.

Primaries weaken, but "show primaries" wouldn't necessarily have to draw blood against our guy....only against theirs.

It would be a staged event and not a serious one.

There was an article recently that the President's campaign 9 mos ahead .. so far ahead they were already making plans for buses to take people to the election polls.

And .. it has also been said that the WH is waiting for the dems to pick a nominee. Why they're waiting I don't know .. but it's not the first time they've run a campaign so I'll just have to trust their judgment.

It will be interesting to see if Edwards goes against the dim/media's plan and goes after Kerry. (debates, attacks, etc.)

So far, they have all been singing the same chorus of Bush bashing. If he goes against Kerry, then the media will have to prop up one or the other. Will Edwards lose his VP chance? Did he ever have one? Will the media boost him above Kerry? What's an empty suit to do?
