The McAuliffe idiocy of bringing up Bush's service record was an utterly disastrous mistake from the Democratic viewpoint. Not in their world. In the Dem worldview, Vietnam is the filter through which all foreign policy matters are judged. And it's not WHAT you did during Vietnam, but what conclusions you drew afterwards. As a result, Bill Clinton the draft dodger and John Kerry the admitted war criminal get a pass - but George Bush the honorably discharged National Guard fighter pilot gets reamed over service minutae BECAUSE HE DREW THE WRONG CONCLUSION FROM HIS EXPERIENCES.

Well said. I flew helicopters in Vietnam. I recall a fortunate few guys in flight school got assignments which made their going to Vietnam unlikely. We were happy for them! Others who found similar legitimate avenues to places other than Vietnam also had our blessing. Those who didn't stab us in the back while we were there, didn't call us war criminals afterward, and got on with their lives, I wish them well. I cannot say the same for Kerry. Or McGovern.
