Baking soda triggers anthrax scare at Philly hotel

By The Associated Press
Friday, February 6, 2004

A white powder that turned out to be baking soda used by a hotel guest to brush his teeth triggered an anthrax scare yesterday at a Center City hotel in Philadelphia. A maid cleaning a seventh-floor room at the Windsor Hotel and Residential Apartments found a white envelope containing the powder. She brought it to her supervisor, who put it in a plastic bag and called police.

Fire department hazardous materials crews descended on the hotel shortly before 9 a.m. along with police, fire and city officials. Police said initial tests of the powder were positive for anthrax, but later tests indicated it was baking soda.

Seven hotel employees were quarantined for several hours before the all-clear was given at about 12:30 p.m.

IMO, many of these "scares" are just people who have watched the news and now freak out at the sight of "white powder"....heck, back in the 80s, they would have dipped their finger in it to see if it was party time.

Thanks for the list.

Last night I thought I heard (caught tail end of ricin story on local news) that something suspicious, possibly ricin, was found in Fayetteville, N.C. I have searched and not found any articles to confirm this. Do you have any info, or, did I hear the entire thing incorrectly? Thanks appalachian dweller.

RICIN INVESTIGATIN EXPANDS TO TENNESSEE

The Associated Press

WASHINGTON Feb. 6 — The ricin investigation has expanded to Tennessee and trucker radio shows, but investigators still had no clues about the origin of the poison found in a Senate office, officials said Friday. Searches of Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist's six offices in his home state, plus those in the Capitol complex, were completed Thursday. Investigators have not found the letter or package the ricin may have spilled from, and no new traces of ricin have been discovered, said FBI spokeswoman Debra Weierman.

Here's another one for your list:

(Windsor Locks-AP Feb. 6, 2004 7:30 AM) _ State and federal agents are investigating the discovery of a powdery substance at the post office at Bradley International airport.

Its the third such discovery this week. Discoveries in Wallingford and Bridgeport proved harmless.

The powder was discovered just before midnight. A sample has been taken to the Department of Public Health for testing.

Nobody has required medical attention.
