However, my understanding is that during the Muslim conquest, suicide squads were routinely deployed during major battles as part of the standard array of Muslim military tactics. Am I off on this?

This tactic would not surpise me. The supreme Islamic war tactic is assassination. Al Qaeda has often used this. Saddam Hussein got his start as an assassin. Only problem is what once was done with daggers (and the perp getting killed) is now done by scum bag suicide bomber who kill 20, maim 40, while only one of them die
