How ridiculous a statement is that ..?? Is the stock Tom Daschle owns being put into a Foundation which funds anti-war marches, and funds groups which destroy property, etc.

Of course. What I'm questioning is whether deciding to do it for political reasons makes any sense. Other than her last name, what makes anyone think that Mrs. Ketchup has anything to do with the H.J. Heinz company? She is not an officer of the company, nor is she on its board of directors. She is not listed among those people who own 5% or more of the company's shares, nor does any foundation-type entity which could be linked to her own 5% or more.

She is the widow of a Heinz family member. That's it. She does not have anything to do with running the Heinz company, and if she once inherited a big chunk of its stock, she has long since sold her position.

This makes about as much sense as boycotting French's mustard to hurt "the French."

Someone mentioned a while back that the Heinz company donated to the Republicans. Not sure the amount or election cycle. Perhaps its a holdover from the first Mr. Heinz. Someone should check the donations list on the FEC. I also know a lot of companies donate to both parties.

Her husband was the Heinz heir, and he was a GOP senator. She inherited from him. Much like Ray Kroc's widow did, and despite him having been conservative, she gave $1 million to the DNC.

The issue here is the Heinz organization may still be conservative. We don't know. And another poster pointed out she may no longer own any stock. She may have liquidated it and put cash in the trust. We don't know.

The corporation could be asked.

I base my opinions on facts and the fact of the matter is, when I posted my opinion about "Boycotting Heinz" it was a full month prior to any of us finding out how she was actually spending Heinz money.

Now that the particulars are becoming public I have a very different opinion.  Maybe you should have asked.....like thoughtomator who pointed out that the circumstances on which I was basing my opinion had changed and that I should reconsider my position.

A while back everyone here was going crazy when it was revealed Joan Kroc had left $200 million to NPR in her will. Boycotts of Mcdonalds were the standard call. A later thread revealed she had also left $1.5 billion to the Salvation Army.

A pair of Heinz foundations is donating to Peaceful Tides, IIRC, which is funding the activities of the women whose husbands died in the WTC who are denouncing GWB's campaign commercial that's about Sep 11, 2001.
