6 ft of Snow over Eastern Lake Ontario in Upstate NY

(Oswego-AP) -- A central New York town is nearing six feet of snow from the latest onslaught of squalls blowing off of Lake Ontario.

The National Weather Service says the town of Parish near the eastern end of the lake has received 69 inches of new snow over the past two days.

The city of Oswego has another two-plus feet of new snow today while nearby Fulton is buried under about five feet of snow that has fallen over the past week. Futon officials have asked people to offer their vacant lots so highway crews have a place to dump the snow they're removing from city streets.

The weather service says Oswego County is approaching the ten-foot snowfall total for the month of January alone.

Most schools in the area north of Syracuse closed for day, and the five-thousand students at Oswego State College are into their second snow day in a row.

Got bombed here today in Pulaski, 3 feet so far today and counting. Traffic is snarled by the I-81 traffic being rerouted through town. Takes 1-2 hr to go two blocks more due to the buses and tractor trailer than the snow.

They closed the schools here in Nashville TN for the second time this week in anticipation of snow. We didn't even get a decent dusting either time. Barely a few flakes this morning.

The problemo seems to be that the schools check with the local TV weather pipple instead of the NWS. The local TV's always hype the snow because snow means more tune-in for the local morning shows. So the school system buys into the hype and closes schools, only to have NO SNOW show up.

Au contraire. It's a blessing. BroomstickOne won't be flying into that part of the state til the Spring thaw.

LOL wish that was the case , but this kind of snow has been around here long before that demon-seed was spawned. Usually have 10-12 of these storms a year , though only 8-12 inches usually. These 6 foot storms show up about once a decade.

Acutally around here, it seemed that the news stations would fight to understate the snow, thinking it would make more people tune in to hear a rosier forecast regardless is it was true or not. I remember my father grabbing whatever forecast showed the least amount of inclement weather and running with it.

69 inches in 2 days is alot. I was driving north of Albany on Wednesday, greasy, but not much accumulation. Home (southern Maine) has had little snow so far this season, save for the 40 inches in early December.

Yeah, they closed sumner as well. Remember last year they didn't close school because it wasn't snowing yet? As soon as my kids got to school the bottom fell out. My son didn't get home till 6pm by firemen and EMP's cause I could not get up the ridge to White House.

This is all lake effect snow, correct? We get it, but not to the extent you all do in upstate NY.

Sorry for the problems up there.

My biggest problem here in Central Texas is which color T-shirt I should wear, red or blue?

I guess it doesn't matter if I wear my kakki shorts.

All lake effect. Lake Ontario never freezes and this storm was kicked up by 20+MPH winds mostly W that span the 200 mile length of the lake. When they do that and stay Westerly these storms occur.

You should have seen it earlier this week here in VA Beach. 3 in of snow leads to lots of school and business closings, numerous accidents on the roads. The two biggest cases were: some idjit woman slams on her brakes at a rail crossing. Her car slid partway onto the track, where it was clipped by an oncoming train. She suffered only minor injuries. Then there was the case where the state trooper was working an accident when he gets clipped by a sliding car, he goes flying about 20 ft and lands on his cruiser. Also suffered only minor injuries.
