This is very stupid of them.

Really. They have casings with the caliber stamped on the back and refuse to tell the public what the shooter(s) are using. The only reason I can think of for this is to keep 100's or 1000's of tips from coming in and then having to check up on them, or maybee they have multiple calibers? It wouldn't be hard to toss some range brass around to throw off leads...Of course it also wouldn't be hard to tape a bag onto a reciever either.

Good points, those are all possiblities. The shooter could be playing games with the LEO's heads, dropping random range brass. But most detectives welcome such funny-guy false leads, they all in their own way help to paint a picture of the killer.
