WASHINGTON — On what had been the eve of his widely expected acquittal, the trial of the second person charged by German authorities as an accomplice of the Sept. 11 hijackers was thrown into turmoil yesterday after prosecutors disclosed the existence of a surprise witness purporting to link Iran to the hijackings. The mysterious witness, who goes by the name Hamid Reza Zakeri and claims to have been a longtime member of the Iranian intelligence service, is said to have told German investigators that the Sept. 11 plot represented what one termed a "joint venture" between the terrorist group al-Qaida and the Iranian government.

Hmmmm? That's an interesting thought. I remember the Gore thingy because Gore went to the USSR and signed an agreement with them WITHOUT THE APPROVAL OR KNOWLEDGE OF CONGRESS .. which is TREASON!!

I had forgotten what the deal was about. Wow! Subs .. that could change the whole dynamic. But .. have you ever seen our subs ..?? We have a sub base here in SD and those ships are the most awesome looking things. Ours can run circles around any of those old USSR subs. Actually .. this might be a good thing for us.

Back in 1996 when I was on a pig boat doing surveillanc off the coast of "none-of-your-business" I remember intel that those Kilo's were welded to the pier. Something about cold water boats not lasting very long in the warm waters of the gulf. Heat exchangers don't exchange much heat in that water.

when I was on a pig boat doing surveillance.....

"Pig boat"? You mean a diesel boat? I thought the USN hadn't had any diesels in the inventory since they retired Albacore and the sorrowful quartet of "Harder, Darter, Trigger, Trout, / Always in and never out."

If the Iranian "Kilos" are no longer serviceable, I'm glad to hear it -- though I never heard of water temperature shortening a submarine's service life. Hard living maybe would, but I never heard that about tropical waters.

Only if her name is Mata Hari, and I'm wearing a Kevlar undershirt and a teflon condom.

But thanks for the thought.
