I felt it appropriate that it be run again - so that everyone can read it.

Any suggestions?

Additionally, Californians, specifically LA - what can we do to repeal Special Order 40? I have never heard of this little gem! Have you?

This has been posted at least twice but that's ok. It just shows why the Feds can't do anything about illegal immigration until the States help.

Heather McDonald's article points out that the state and local authorities are a major part of the problem. Vested interests continue to plague any kind of reform. I misread this earlier , glad I got a chance to see it again. .
Bottom line, as long as the locals don't do anything and , in fact, exacerbate the situation, nothing done on the Federal level will make any difference.

I constantly hear that amnesty and employer enforcement will help solve the illegal immigration problem. Unfortunately the underground economy that supports these people won't go away because of employer enforcement, and amnesty is likely to have reverse effect. The minute any legislation is passed giving a blanket style status to these people, they will swarm from all corners of the globe. There will always be work for cash under the table, as long as there are lawns to be mowed, houses to be cleaned, construction to be done, etc. There is, and will never likely be a solution to the problem. It will continue to be exploited by those that benefit from the issue, namely politicians and businesses. The Government will continue to make the problem worse with their pandering and "non-fix" fixes.

"The LAPD’s ban on immigration enforcement mirrors bans in immigrant-saturated cities around the country, from New York and Chicago to San Diego, Austin, and Houston. These "sanctuary policies" generally prohibit city employees, including the cops, from reporting immigration violations to federal authorities."

** SPECIAL ORDER 40 ALERT - PING **

"Speical Order 40" is in effect. And not just in Los Angeles, California. The gubmint has made it quasi-official throughout the entire United States.

"The disastrous Citizenship USA project of 1996 was a luminous case of politics driving the INS to sacrifice enforcement to "benefits." When, in the early 1990s, the prospect of welfare reform drove immigrants to apply for citizenship in record numbers to preserve their welfare eligibility, the Clinton administration, seeing a political bonanza in hundreds of thousands of new welfare-dependent citizens, ordered the naturalization process radically expedited. Thanks to relentless administration pressure, processing errors in 1996 were 99 percent in New York and 90 percent in Los Angeles, and tens of thousands of aliens with criminal records, including for murder and armed robbery, were naturalized."

Special Order 40 has been around much longer than when it was formally announced.
