Is "compassion"
really the job of government? Not that government shouldn't be efficient, just, and courteous. It should. But should it be "compassionate"?
Maybe it's time to question some underlying assumptions here.

We are a government of the people, are the people not to be compassionate?

Of course government must reflect the compassion of the American people. A social-Darwinist nightmare wouldn't uphold the sanctity of life. It would make a mockery of the Preamble of the DOI.

It is a kindness to discourage behaviors which will end up hurting people. That is because we live in a Christian culture which values human life and worth, and is the whole basis of self-governance.
