Dad: McKinney wants rematch against Majette

Former Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney, ousted from office in a hostile 2002 Democratic primary, wants a rematch against the woman who beat her: U.S. Rep. Denise Majette (D-Ga.).

On Sunday, McKinney's father, Billy McKinney, a former state representative, confirmed his daughter's planned entry into the 2004 4th District Democratic Party primary.

"Absolutely, she's running," the elder McKinney said. "We're going to make it exciting."

He said his daughter was in Barbados for a speaking engagement and could not be reached for comment. Attempts to reach Majette were unsuccessful.

McKinney's apparent return ends months of speculation about her future.

The outspoken former congresswoman had been courted by the Green Party to run for president, but she issued a statement Saturday turning down the third-party invitation to run.

"I have received words of encouragement from every corner of this country and from Green Party supporters beyond our shores," McKinney said in a letter to the Greens. "But in the end, a national campaign is not in the cards for me at this time."

Billy McKinney said running on the Green Party national ticket "was just too way out for Cynthia."

But retaking the 4th District from Majette could be an uphill battle as well in the district, most of it in DeKalb County, with a sliver in southern Gwinnett County.

As the challenger this time around, McKinney would not command the same fund-raising power she held as an incumbent. Her most recent campaign disclosure report, filed Dec. 18, showed that she was $32,000 in debt.

McKinney also provokes as much revulsion from conservative voters who consider her unpatriotic and even unstable as she does passionate support from many African-Americans and liberals, who view her as a lone voice in Congress against the Bush administration's Middle East policies.

Billy McKinney said resentment over the war in Iraq will bring out a flood of 4th District voters angry over the war who will put her back in office. "Everything Cynthia has said has proven to be true," Billy McKinney said, referring to probes of intelligence failures that contributed to the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

I agree, it is a freakshow. This sounds cliched but there is nothing real about reality TV. It's stupid and wasteful.

Using this definition, to answer my own question, politics becoming reality TV is a bad thing because politics deal with issues that are important to our way of living, our convictions, and our freedom. If all this is reduced to a mere circus act, many people will ignore these subjects and we may end up losing everything we hold dear.

Which proves exactly nothing. When you read that a Democrat voted in a GOP primary, you know that the state has an open primary. I live in Wisconsin; Wisconsin has an open primary & I will be voting for Sharpie (if he's on the ballot). In the general election, I will vote for GW.
