When playing the lottery, a person is shelling out $1 for the privilege to daydream and hope for a whole day. So the proper equation is:
Net= -money spent +money earned +fun had while losing oneself in dreams of yachts and scantily clad... -disappointment of loss
It's when you trade your welfare check for 200 scratch-offs that your net is negative.
