CLEVELAND (AP) - A woman said through tears Thursday that she lied about losing the winning ticket for a $162 million lottery prize awarded to another woman.

Elecia Battle, 40, of Cleveland, is dropping her lawsuit to block payment of the Mega Millions jackpot to the certified winner, said her lawyer Sheldon Starke.

She speaks well, you know. But her decision to run the scam was from the same place that got her into trouble before. There is hope for her. She could work up an inspirational speaking tour. No kidding. Make lots of money for her family.

The number of times it's already landed on a particular color is irrelevant. Each spin is a completely independent event. The odds of the ball landing on a particular color in a spin is exactly the same as it was in the last spin. (~47.2% each for red and black)

Which is exactly why the Casino puts the past numbers on display. They want you to bet based on prior spins thus giving you a feeling that there is some sort of strategy involved in the game when it is pure luck. The only control you have is how much you bet, what type of bet you make, and whether to bet or walk away and spend your money on the buffet.

13,983,816 to 1. In other words, forgeddaboudit.

Unless the prize is more than 13,983,816 dollars and you were able to buy every possible combination of numbers. Of course, it is physically impossible to buy 14 million lottery tickets and no one has ever been able to "beat" the game this way.

Martingdale system. Two problems with this. The casinos have a stopper with the table maximum, for example the maximum bet on a $10 bet table might be $5,000. Second problem you would need a nearly unlimited bankroll to win that $10.
Spin 1--$10
Spin 2--$20
Spin 3--$40
Spin 4--$80
Spin 5--$160
Spin 6--$320
Spin 7--$640
Spin 8--$1,280
Spin 9--$2,560
Spin 10--$5,120 etc.
If you ever watch a roulette wheel, there are many times when you will have a 10 spin match.

Yup. Ditto for Baccarat - I could never figure out why people have those pads to keep track of past bank/player/ties.

The only way you can potentially win at Roulette starts by over a long period of time studying the "dealer" who sets the ball in motion on the wheel, figuring out how much force he or she puts on the ball, and from there you could possibly have an idea on what range on the wheel the ball will land. That's extremely difficult to figure out and that's assuming the "dealer" uses the same amount of force every time.

"I'm not a bad person, I'm really not,'' she said.

Yes you are , people like you are horrible. What is the line---'The darkest hour of a persons life is when they attempt to acquire wealth without earning it'? Something like that. People like her are living an illusion. I can't fathom what goes through the depths of the human mind of making that kind of decision. She really needs to go and shake herself.(to clear out the brain)Fortunately, she'll have time in jail to do just that. They'd better charge her.

Of course, it is physically impossible to buy 14 million lottery tickets and no one has ever been able to "beat" the game this way.

It has happened before in Virginia.

from 1992

Virginia OK’s Australian lottery win

RICHMOND, Va.-An Australian gambling syndicate will carry away a $27 million lottery jackpot from the State of Virginia after buying about 5.5 million $1 tickets, officials said Tuesday.

Lottery director Kenneth Thorson said the ticket is valid, despite questions about whether the enormous Australian purchase violated lottery rules.

In February, agents for the International Lotto Fund of Melbourne, Australia, bought tickets by the million-including the winner-but time ran out before they could corner all 7 million (approximate) possible combinations.

Thorson said the Australians would be given the benefit of any doubt that the ticket was bought in accordance with state lottery regulations.

Rules require that tickets be sold only at a location listed on each retailers’ license, but many of the Australian tickets were paid for by cashiers’ checks at the corporate headquarters of the Farm Fresh grocery store chain.

The $1 tickets were later issued at the retail outlets.

“It was impossible for the lottery, or the claimants, to prove positively how the winning ticket was purchased,” Thorson said.

The winning ticket nets $27,036,142 and the prize will be paid out over 20 years, beginning with $1,348,142 before taxes in the first year and then 19 checks of $1,352,000. There are 2,500 investors in the Australian syndicate.

Thorson said the first check should be issued next week once officials verify the identity of the claimants and determine the amount of income tax.

The state Lottery Board adopted emergency regulations of March 2 to discourage block ticket sales but stopped short of limiting the number of tickets a lottery player can buy.

No regulations existed on block sales when the ticket was bought

At first I thought you were joking. Two points: one, each spin is an independent variable, not related to past performance; two, for a “double down” strategy to mathematically zero out, you need a capacity to place bets at least as great as the capacity of the casino.

I have a theory that these mathematical “slight of hand” betting schemes are really promulgated by casinos (many through ghost authors) to encourage participation by the non-mathematically trained.

Here is a simple rule: you can’t change the odds by a betting scheme. Counting cards may work because the counting of the cards (not the betting scheme) may change the odds.

The “stat” in “stat-boy” stands for statistician. I dated my wife while I was in graduate school, and one nickname she had for me was “Stat-boy”.

If I did "forgeddaboudit" then my chances becomes

infinite to 0

Which is infinitely worse than

13,983,816 to 1.

If the payout is high enough, the expectation value of a $1 play actually rises above $1.

Here in Texas the problem has been constantly rising odds without commensurate jackpots.

At first it was 1:16,000,000, then 1:26,000,000 and now 1:47,000,000.

After the last odds hike I gave up. For convenience I'd been doing a 10 draw (lasting for five weeks at twice a week) ticket. The odds were usually not in my favor. But as the occurences of a decent payout decreased and decreased, the expectation value approached zero.

Can you say "ripoff"?

I have mentioned it on another thread but there are two problems with your expectation value for US lotteries in general and thats not even counting multiple winner outcomes. The first one is that the stated jackpot is paid out over a 20 year or longer annual schedule. If you take the lump sum payment option it seems to be around 60% of the stated jackpot. On top of that lottery winnings are taxable in the US which again depending on the state you live in can wipe out another 50% of what you walk away with. The single dollar you bet with is after tax income. The Powerball website states the jackpot odds are 1 in 120 million . The numbers may be a bit off but you are only getting close to a break even situation when the stated jackpot rises above 400 million. That is higher than the greatest jackpot in US lottery history so far.
