What do you suppose would happen to our economy of we suddenly departed every illegal alien who is currently here?
To: Peach
Listened to the speech with my husband; almost afraid to read the thread because this issue is ticking off good Republicans more than the Medicare bill.Yes it is. Hopefully Congress will get a clue, and not push anything into law.
To: CA Conservative
Thank you for your voice of reason in this fit of hysteria.
To: Pro-Bush
To me, the worst part is the way all this went down. It was done unilaterally by President Bush. I think he is proposing this to Congress, he is not doing an Executive order.

"Green cards? We ain't got no green cards. We don't need no green cards. I don't have to show you any stinking green cards!"
Original, and dozens of copycats.

Illegals have been depressing wages for a long time. Really? I thought it was the consumer voting with his dollars that drove market forces...silly me...
I am sure glad you cleared that up for me...

And what will the criteria for employers be to show they 'tried' to hire Americans???? Shouldn't they give first rights to jobs to welfare recipients and unemployed? How and the world is the government going to monitor this?
To: Stu Cohen
Like Gray Davis did? BTW, what is he doing now?
Uh Stuie, considering your rhetoric, you were not part of the coalition that helped elect Schwareneggar. Judging by your rhetoric you are McClintockbot, IMO.

Immigration enforcement is a resposiblity of the federal government spelled out in the constitution. Speed limit violations are generally misdemeanors enforced by the states. I can accidently speed, I can not however accidently violate immigrations laws of a foreign country like Mexico.
To: Steel Wolf
"How would using military resources to intercept non-U.S. citizens from entering the country equate to putting U.S. citizens under martial law?" OK I'll type slower so you can keep up.
Possee Comitatus basically states that Military Personel cannot be used in Law Enforcement Matters.
The only way currently avaiable to the Federal Governmet to allow the Military to get involved in any Law Enforcment Matter is by Delcaring a National Emergency and Putting the Nation under Martial Law.
Understand Now?
Hell If you want a real soloution, just put forth an plan to build Observation Posts about every mile along the borders complete with living quarters for personel and holding cells for detainees.
Then hire all these folks who are out of work and have them patrol the borders and capture Illegals and Book them and return them across the Border. Problem Solved and you eliminate the Jobless Problem.
Of course it will cost about 80 Billion Dollars and of course the Unions will immediately jump in and want to register all the Owrkes in the Democrats but hey it would work.

In another generation they will be assimilated, I believe. As I said, the original immigrants gfrom Germany never did learn much English. Their children and grandchildren did. That is why it is important to get the kids learning English and not do the Spanish language classes in schools. Most of the workers my son has on his crew use very little English, but they are trying to learn.
Of course, these guys go home every winter and don't come back until March. They are like the guest workers talked about in this program.

So am I supposed to not see the literally dozens of men standing by the Circle K waiting for a pickup every morning? That's just it precisely. The only thing we have done is create a new category. We will have low wage American workers, Mexican workers here on this plan who will work for cheaper than low wage Americans and, still, border crossers here illegally willing to work cheaper than the documented worker.
I am disgusted.

One more effort to destroy the average American. This issue may cause the republican party to implode. The hyperbole on this thread is neck-deep. This is a shining example.

The whole damn program is an amnesty program by a different name. I see it as a way to find out who is in our country.
Like sweeping floors at Wal-Mart?
Whatever. A job.
And you really think they're gonna go home? Please. Be realistic.
They will be documented. It will be a lot easier to find them then it is now.
Like it is now for those hiring illegals? Hmmmm?
He said he would step up environment. I believe him.
So am I supposed to not see the literally dozens of men standing by the Circle K waiting for a pickup every morning?
That's the ticket. No job? Go home!
