...Recently, my hometown newspaper featured a front page article by none other than a muslim professor teaching at our local college. His article, of course, was against the war in Iraq and was anti-American. I just shuddered because I know 90% of the people in our town disagree with everything he said and everything he stands for but few will say anything because of political correctness. Also, his status as a professor protects him. Homeland security had better be monitoring EVERY mideast "professional" who has come to this country over the past 30 years. This is war and it is here.

Breaking: Explosives Found at Tri-State Airport

Explosive Substances Found at Tri-State Airport.

Tri-State Airport in Wayne County has been evacuated. A perimeter has been set up, and evacuees are being asked to stand back 350 feet from the airport.

The Transportation Security Administration reports that a passenger’s water bottle screened positive for an explosive material around 9:15 this morning. A second test was confirmed at 11:25.

NBC News reports that federal screeners found four containers of liquids inside a woman’s carry-on bag during the screening process this morning. Larry Salyers, Tri-State Airport Director, tells WSAZ the woman is of Pakistani origin, lived in Jackson, Michigan and most recently lived in the Huntington area. She is being detained for questioning.

FBI officials are on scene.

UPDATE at 8/17/06 1:38:21 pm:

The Associated Press forgets to mention that the suspect is Pakistani: Bottle Prompts W.Va. Terminal Evacuation.

A West Virginia airport terminal was evacuated Thursday after a female passenger’s water bottle twice tested positive for explosives, a Transportation Security Administration spokeswoman said.

“The bomb squad is on site and the woman is being interviewed by the FBI,” Amy von Walter said.

Security checkpoint screeners got a positive test on a machine that uses swabs to find traces of explosives, von Walter said. A bomb- sniffing dog also reacted to the water bottle.

A screener noticed the bottle in a woman’s carryon bag as she prepared to board a flight to Charlotte, N.C., said Tri-State Airport authority President Jim Booton.

Commercial airline service was temporarily suspended, and about 100 passengers and airport employees were ordered to leave the terminal, Booton said.

At least one flight was diverted to Charleston’s Yeager Airport, about 60 miles away.

Woman On Diverted Plane Is America-Hating “Journalist”

August 17th, 2006

From Boston’s CBS station, CBS4Boston.com:

This undated photo released by a family member shows Catherine C. Mayo of Braintree, Vt., who was scheduled to appear in federal court Thursday afternoon, Aug. 17, 2006, in Boston. Mayo was to be charged with interfering with a flight crew after disrupting United 923 bound from London to Washington, D.C. on Wednesday.

Woman In Logan Airport Incident Identified

Aug 17, 2006 9:28 am US/Eastern

(CBS4) BOSTON Criminal charges could be filed Thursday against a Vermont woman who caused a disturbance aboard a London-to-Virginia jet that was diverted to Logan Airport.

59-year-old Catherine Mayo is being held by federal authorities in Boston.

Investigators say she was a claustrophobic passenger who became upset and interfered with the flight crew on United Airlines flight 923 Wednesday morning. The pilot declared an in-flight emergency and landed the plane at Logan. The Boeing 767 was escorted by two F-15 jets based out of Otis Air National Guard Base on Cape Cod.

Passengers say Mayo paced the aisles and peppered her incoherent mutterings with the word "Pakistan." They said two plainclothes men on board and flight attendants tackled the woman. She was handcuffed while the flight was diverted.

After a day filled with conflicting reports about what she was carrying, an FBI spokeswoman confirmed Mayo had a screwdriver, lighters and matches when she was subdued.

Mayo was taken into custody, questioned inside the airport, and held overnight in Boston.

All the passengers and luggage were removed from the plane. The passengers were interviewed at Logan and the luggage was spread out on the runway and searched by TSA canine teams.

Federal investigators said there was no indication of terrorism.

Several hours later, the flight departed for Dulles Airport outside Washington D.C. and landed there around 7 p.m.

The flight had taken off from Heathrow Airport in London, where there’s been tight security in place since last week’s arrests in a plot to blow up trans-Atlantic flights.

In other articles Catherine Mayo has been reported to be a journalist, as she was by the UK’s Guardian:

A British intelligence source told the Guardian the passenger was a journalist.

If so, perhaps this is our heroine writing for the Pakistan Daily Times:

Freedom after 9/11

Americans understand, deep down, that they have lost their freedom. They had it once, they remember what it was, but it is gone

by Catherine Mayo
22nd July 2003
The Daily Times (Pakistan)

Plato was the first person to think in words about what it would be like for a human being to be self-governing. His thoughts tended to go around in circles, because he was a man ahead of his time and he didn’t have the words. His symbolism of the cave is good, because that is how he felt. He knew the possibility was there, in the dark, but he just couldn’t see it.

Self-government is a discipline that we all take for granted now. It means action after careful consideration of our moral principles. It is hard to imagine how the cave man made decisions, because he didn’t do anything unless he got the permission from someone else. It takes a long time for a human being to trust his own knowledge about the difference between good and bad. Confidence in our inner connection with God has to be taught to us as children, and we have to teach it to our children.

Americans now are feeling about the same way as their heroes, the troops in Baghdad. They are tired, confused and they see no end to their confusion. Ambushes happen every day, from any quarter, and they haven’t figured out who the enemy is. They are putting out so many small brushfires on a daily basis that they don’t have time to think things through and plan a strategy. Their leaders are no help, the president ran off to start a road map for peace between Israel and Palestine, and then did a comprehensive political tour of Africa. Now Bush is worried about Iran. North Korea, too, but mostly Iran. North Korea is building up a nuclear arsenal that it will sell to Iran for food, and then Iran will give the bombs to all of its terror groups so they can attack the US.

The decision-makers on the ground in Iraq are not faring any better. They are trying to decide who would be the best people to rule in Iraq in a council form of government, an idea they finally hit upon because they couldn’t figure out how to start a democracy.

Like their troops, Americans are plagued by questions about why they are in Iraq. No WMD, no Al Qaeda, no regime change. But they can’t admit this to themselves. Never in history has the US made such a bad mistake. Americans are wandering around in the dark, hoping that someone will provide an intelligent explanation soon.

But the moment has passed. They have gone back to the cave man way of thinking. They have forgotten that they know how to be self-governing.

I got a letter from a person in the US arguing that I was misinformed about a lot of things, and that I should remember what it is to be free. He didn’t define what he meant by ‘free’. I am free, I don’t have to remember what it was like, I know it now. I am free to see the difference between right and wrong, and to do the right thing.

I have been trying to compile a definition of ‘freedom’ or what it means to Americans at present. To them, freedom means doing something about 9/11 so it will never happen again.

But it has not happened again. We are coming up to the second anniversary, and the horror of that day has not been repeated.

So let me try again. To Americans, at this moment in history, freedom means knowing that they can do anything they want, and it will always turn out right in the end. Freedom means believing something is true with such conviction that it is required to come true.

No, now I am not making sense. Americans understand, deep down, that they have lost their freedom. They had it once, they remember what it was, but it is gone.

Plato’s ideas about the potential in every human being are written in a style that makes us smile when we read it. Plato had an interesting, off-beat sense of humour. Anyone who has hope, and confidence in himself, has a sense of humour. Even the Iraqis, looting the presidential palaces after the fall of Baghdad, had a sense of humour about themselves. They called themselves ‘Ali Babas’, and one would scold another to take back the carpet even while he was making off with the chandelier.

But Americans do not have a sense of humour anymore. This is the most telling characteristic now, the biggest cultural difference between them and the rest of the world. They can’t laugh at a joke, they don’t even understand it.

Cathy Mayo is an American journalist based in Pakistan

And in another article by the same author, she says she is from Vermont — and much else besides:

The Patriotism Enforcers

An American in Pakistan: A New Kind of Arrogance

by Catherine Mayo

As a Vermonter used to 6 months of snow, two months of mud season, and one month when I can take off my long winter underwear, it is taking me awhile to realise that Pakistani heat is not a one-day event that will go away with a thunderstorm in the morning. The solution I have found is to drink one coke after another - with ice. I’m not sure what a doctor would say about this, but it works. So I am doing all right with the heat. I can’t blame it for the bad mood I woke up with this morning.

I started reading the paper, but then put it down after glancing at the headlines. It gives me a severe case of nerves when I know what the news is before I have read it. Once America decided that "might is right", everything else became a cliché, too. When dissent is not allowed, all truth becomes predictable. But that is not the reason for my bad mood, either. What really bothered me, as I drank my coffee and ate my eggs, was that I had to somehow write a column that told the truth in new ways. It is getting harder and harder. What if one morning I wake up and find that it can’t be done anymore?

Feeling sorry for myself, I put on a CD of really old music. Rolling Stones, ZZ Top, Genesis. When they woke up in the morning, they knew that they had a whole day yet to be invented. They could plan on moving to the moon, and make a list of what they would need to bring with them. They could make up a new kind of love, like the time that people did scientific experiments to show that two potted plants sitting next to each other on a windowsill could love one another if they listened to enough Mozart. Even the thought of such a possibility can make a person smile in the morning.

But if I invented a truth today, I know already that by the end of the day I would have to declare myself a failure. Someone would listen to me, and shake his head, and tell me that the truth doesn’t matter anymore. Feeling even more sorry for myself, I decided to go out to my favourite lake. I sat on a bench near the shore, under a trumpet vine just like the ones at home. Small birds almost like hummingbirds darted in and out of the orange blossoms. Every once in a while a fish jumped up through the surface of the lake. An old man, sitting on another bench, began to play a Pakistani kind of flute. He was very, very good, his music had so many surprises in it.

Americans are not surprised that there are no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. They are not surprised that Saddam Hussein cannot be found, and that Chemical Ali is missing instead of dead. They are not surprised that there is no Al Qaeda there. They are a little surprised that Iraq has so much desert, they thought that Baghdad made up most of the country. They are not surprised that Iraq’s only terrorist group has been recruited by US troops to serve as a police force. They are not surprised that Iraq’s nuclear facility has been looted, and Iraqi people are showing clear signs of radiation poisoning. What surprises them is that people are asking questions. It is all ancient history now, the stock market is up again, the news now is Martha Stewart again, and the Laci Peterson case, and the west nile virus. The rest of the world should be doing what they are doing: shrug your shoulders, man, what is done is done, it is time to move on. It goes right over the heads of Americans that when a crime has been committed, questions need to be asked.

Americans are true innocents when it comes to this. Since they did it, no crime has been committed, because America cannot do anything wrong. It is the innocence of an arrogance that even other empires in the world do not understand. When the Greek Empire ruled the world, or the British Empire, they understood that defeat at certain times and in certain places was inevitable. They knew that the power of a government did not insure its infallibility. Americans, on the other hand, make a false assumption based on the definition of democracy itself.

America relied on the free voice of its own people to tell the state when it was doing the wrong thing. Good prevails when every voice is heard with equal respect. There was no room in the American system for blind obedience. Each person in the country had the moral responsibility to speak his own truth, and to listen with equal seriousness to the truth of others. Judgments of right and wrong were made among the people themselves, through the humility of majority rule. When dissent is silenced, a person does not know the truth of the man standing next to him.

Cathy Mayo is an American journalist based in Pakistan

I guess we have even lost the freedom the freedom to yell "fire" in a crowded theater.

But someone should explain to Ms. Mayo’s the Platonic ideals of government, which were more reflected by Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union than the United States.

Indeed, Ms. Mayo sounds like quite the uninformed America-hating Bush-bashing kook. What a surprise she’s a journalist.

(That’s a joke, in case you don’t understand — you stupid American.)

Update!

The photo release now posted at the top and the latest Associated Press article have confirmed our suspicions.

This is the Catherine Mayo who writes hate-America screeds for the Muslim Pakistani Daily Times.

How long will it be before our one party media tells us about this?

If ever?

I find a Liberal district judge supposedly basing her f#cked-up ruling to subvert the defense of this nation on the basis of separation of powers utterly obscene.
She should be removed from office immediately, for treasonous incompetence. Let's put it this way: if we get hit again, especially with one or more WMD's, the American public will be in no mood to put up with the ACLU's tortured, twisted, hair-splitting legalisms and technicalities--especially once the public discovers that we could have prevented these attacks using all the surveillance tools at our disposal.

Triacetone triperoxide? This should be a lesson to all those gun-grabbing nuts who love to dance on the graves of murder victims. Anyone who really wants to kill a large group of people can do so with ingredients available in grocery and hardware stores. Passing laws against gun ownership just leaves the decent folk defenseless.

I'm sure the islamo-Nazis on the streets of Britain are all too cognizant of this.

This is really interesting.

You know how Islamic militants have had the strategy of seducing American women online, in order to either convert them to Islam and then radicalize them, or to marry them so that she can bring him in the US as her husband? (You may remember the recent case of the Palestinian guy and the 16-year-old girl; but there have been other more sinister instances, the links for which I'm too harried to dig up at the moment.)

Well, it looks like Cathy Mayo, the "claustrophobic" woman on the flight who peed in the aisle in fact was one of the duped women. According to this letter she posted in the Randolph VT Herald in 2002, she was seduced by a Pakistani man online in 2001 and then went to Pakistan of her own volition to surprise him and learn more about Islamic culture.

Love & Culture In Pakistan

The ice cream man pedals his cart along the street. His calliope is playing "It's A Small World After All." I can see the blue umbrella of his cart above the security fence.
My room is on the ground floor, in the corner of the hotel near the security guard hut. There are two security guards on duty all the time, day and night. There are also two in the back of the hotel. They wear automatic rifles over their shoulders.
A man singing Islamic prayers is being broadcast over the loud speaker. This is the modern world here in Pakistan. Instead of the call to prayers from the turret of a mosque, loud speakers are installed on every corner like public phone booths in the states. Prayers are offered five times a day. I have a prayer rug in my hotel room, and an arrow on the desk showing me the compass direction toward Mecca.
I have come here by a long strange road. I met Junaid, a Pakistani man, on line before September 11. He is talking about marriage, so I need to get to know him better before I bring him into the US on a fiancé visa. He was refused a visitor visa to the US, so I have come here.
I have already lived through Ramadan, and Eid. I know a lot about his culture, for sure! But now I need to get to know the man. Instant Messenger works well for awhile, but we got to know each other so well that we were arguing all the time.
...etc.

Also, here is a jawdropping love letter she wrote to the Guantanamo inmates in 2003:

Gitmo Love
(scroll down).

... I am trying to think of something to say that will give you a cheerful moment in your day. ...

Yet the spin in the MSM now is that she's just a harmless nut with claustrophobia:

NY Times:

“She has a very serious mental illness,’’ said her court-appointed lawyer, Page Kelley. “This is not a case about terrorism."

Iranian Official: Israel and the US Should Fear the Day Our Missiles Land in the Heart of Tel Aviv

Once again an Iranian official couches this present conflict in explicitly religious terms -- a phenomenon that President Bush and virtually every Western analyst has been cowed into ignoring for fear of charges of "Islamophobia." When you see them on television, imagine a bunch of vintage 1938 talking heads congratulating themselves for analyzing the "root causes" of Kristallnacht without ever once mentioning Nazism.

August 1939 Alert from MEMRITV: "Top Iranian Official Ahmad Khatami: Israel and the US Should Fear the Day Our Missiles Land in the Heart of Tel Aviv":

Following are excerpts from a speech by Ahmad Khatami, member of the Iranian Assembly of Experts, which aired on the Iranian News Channel (IRINN) on August 15, 2006.

Ahmad Khatami: This victory was promised in the Koran: "The party of Allah must triumph." On this occasion, I want to tell Bush and Israeli Prime Minister Olmert that they should learn a lesson from this shameful defeat. They should not bare their fangs, expose their stings, or make threats against Islamic Iran. They should learn a lesson from the fact that a single party [Hizbullah] has turned their days into dark nights. If they decided to display the slightest aggression against Islamic Iran, they should bear in mind that the missiles of the Lebanese Hizbullah, with a range of 70 kilometers, have turned Israel into a ghost-country. They should fear the day that our missiles, with a range of 2,000 kilometers, land in the heart of Tel Aviv. Therefore, we hope that Bush and Israeli Prime Minister Olmert have learned the necessary lesson. They should know that playing with Islam is like playing with a lion's tail.

Pakistani woman with explosives in drink bottles arrested at West Virginia airport

"BREAKING NEWS: Explosive Substances Believed to be Found at Tri-State Airport," from WSAZ NewsChannel 3, with thanks to R.:

Tri-State Airport in Wayne County has been evacuated. A perimeter has been set up, and evacuees are being asked to stand back 350 feet from the airport.

The Transportation Security Administration reports that a passenger's water bottle screened positive for an explosive material around 9:15 this morning. A second test was confirmed at 11:25. TSA is waiting for further testing to determine the exact substance.

NBC News reports that federal screeners found four containers of liquids inside a woman's carry-on bag during the screening process this morning. Larry Salyers, Tri-State Airport Director, tells WSAZ the woman is of Pakistani origin, lived in Jackson, Michigan and most recently lived in the Huntington area. She is being detained for questioning.

The flight in which the woman was going to board was on its way to Charlotte, North Carolina with a final destination of Detroit, Michigan.

FBI officials are on scene.

Profiling Profiles

Taking a page from Israeli security forces, the US has started using a technique for screening at airports that focuses on the people rather than the methodology to stop terrorism. Although currently only an experimental program, the technological escalation of the British sky plot will pressure the Transportation Security Administration into deploying this across all airports:

As the man approached the airport security checkpoint here on Wednesday, he kept picking up and putting down his backpack, touching his fingers to his chin, rubbing some object in his hands and finally reaching for his pack of cigarettes, even though smoking was not allowed.

Two Transportation Security Administration officers stood nearby, nearly motionless and silent, gazing straight at him. Then, with a nod, they moved in, chatting briefly with the man, and then swiftly pulled him aside for an intense search.

Another airline passenger had just made the acquaintance of the transportation agency’s “behavior detection officers.”

Taking a page from Israeli airport security, the transportation agency has been experimenting with this new squad, whose members do not look for bombs, guns or knives. Instead, the assignment is to find anyone with evil intent.

So far, these specially trained officers are working in only about a dozen airports nationwide, including Dulles International Airport here outside Washington, and they represent just a tiny percentage of the transportation agency’s 43,000 screeners.

But after the reported liquid bomb plot in Britain, agency officials say they want to have hundreds of behavior detection officers trained by the end of next year and deployed at most of the nation’s biggest airports.

Israel, which has had to contend with terrorism on airplanes for much longer than anyone else, has maintained a high record of success with this approach. Israel doesn't worry about what a passenger might carry onto a flight as much as they focus on the traveler himself. John Hinderaker at Power Line described his experiences flying El Al several years ago, while traveling with his family to Israel. After only asking a couple of questions, the screener wished him a happy vacation, assured that John meant no harm. (Apparently, the Israeli screener has never seen John in court.)

This approach allows people who present no danger to travel without being treated like a criminal from the moment they step into the airport to the time the plane lands at their destination. Israel understands that restricting items from carry-on luggage, or eliminating carry-on luggage entirely, will not stop a determined effort by terrorists to seize flights or destroy them. Therefore, the screeners focus on the passengers themselves. If they find one that makes them nervous, they start doing a more in-depth interrogation and a thorough search of the passenger and his luggage, carry-on or not.

It's this subjective analysis that has civil libertarians opposed to such procedures in the US. The Times notes that some complain that such a program could turn into racial profiling without any objective safeguards. Some passengers who refused to cooperate in interviews got threatened with arrest, prompting lawsuits. The program in Dulles has uncovered over fifty people whose reactions revealed ill intent, although none of them terror-related.

These criticisms should have died on 9/11. The important point about airport security is to secure the airport and the airplanes, not worry that social attitudes may get bruised. If done properly -- and the Israeli consultants say we have more work to get to that stage -- then this program can catch the actual terrorists and leave the rest of us to travel in peace. Selection comes from a wide net of casual interactions, from which screeners narrow down the potential problems. That seems like a reasonable program, and its success would allow travelers to carry their Juicy Juice and Gatorade on board without getting tackled on the ramp.

One would think that after the latest terrorist plot got revealed, people would understand the need for better screening techniques and the desire to replicate the success of the Israelis. Some people will only be satisfied if passengers travel equally naked and equally shackled to their seats, rather than just find the few people who actually mean us harm.

I'M SURE IT WAS THEIR INVASION OF IRAQ, or maybe their opposition to the Kyoto Protocol that led to this:

Two suitcases containing bottles of gasoline, propane gas and a detonating device that were found abandoned in German regional trains last month were bombs primed to go off and kill a ``high number'' of people, police said. . . .

The July 31 attempt ``is likely to have a terrorist background,'' Zierke said. Investigators found pieces of paper with Arabic letters and telephone numbers from Lebanon in clothes which were in the suitcases to pad the gas bottles, he said. They also found starch bags from Lebanon which were sold in a store in or around Essen, a city in North-Rhine Westphalia.

It couldn't be part of an overall Islamist war plan or anything.

UK Radical Front Group Gets Blogger Suspended

The UK’s Muslim Public Affairs Committee saw nothing wrong when a Reuters employee sent a death threat to Little Green Footballs in May. In fact, MPACUK invented a bizarre conspiracy plot to justify it, calling LGF (quite flatteringly, I thought) “the most powerful enemies Muslims have faced in a thousand years:” MPACUK - Masajid and ISOCs Silent As Zionists Move In On Inayat Bunglawala!

But when British blogger Inigo Wilson wrote some satirical comments critical of Islamic terrorism, MPACUK launched a successful drive to have him suspended from his job with British mobile phone company Orange: MPACUK - SUCCESS: Orange Suspends Islamophobe!   link: 172 comments

Bernard Lewis: August 22

A lot of people are talking about the significance of August 22 in the “Hidden Imam” apocalyptic fantasy apparently believed by Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. I’ve been reluctant to give too much credence to it, because the whole thing smacks of whacked out end times craziness, and Gog knows there’s already enough of that going around.

But here’s Islam scholar Bernard Lewis on the subject, just so we all know what’s under discussion. Because it isn’t completely crazy: August 22link: 314 comments

2. Make sure your gas grill has propane, or you have a sufficient stock of charcoal for that other kind of grill.

3. Have a stash of CASH.

Perlmutter: Photojournalism in Crisis

David D. Perlmutter, Professor and Associate Dean for Graduate Studies & Research at the University of Kansas School of Journalism & Mass Communications, has an excellent piece on the Fauxtography Scandal—with a big salute to all the blogs who pushed the story forward: Photojournalism in Crisis.

(August 18, 2006) — The Israeli-Hezbollah war has left many dead bodies, ruined towns, and wobbling politicians in its wake, but the media historian of the future may also count as one more victim the profession of photojournalism. In twenty years of researching and teaching about the art and trade and doing photo-documentary work, I have never witnessed or heard of such a wave of attacks on the people who take news pictures and on the basic premise that nonfiction news photo- and videography is possible.

I’m not sure, however, if the craft I love is being murdered, committing suicide, or both.

Perhaps it would be more reassuring if the enemy at the gates was a familiar one—politicians, or maybe radio talk show hosts. But the photojournalist standing on the crumbling ramparts of her once proud citadel now sees the vandal army charging for the sack led by “zombietime,” “The Jawa Report,” “Powerline,” “Little Green Footballs,” “confederateyankee,” and many others.

In each case, these bloggers have engaged in the kind of probing, contextual, fact-based (if occasionally speculative) media criticism I have always asked of my students. And the results have been devastating: news photos and video shown to be miscaptioned, radically altered, or staged (and worse, re-staged) for the camera. Surely “green helmet guy,” “double smoke,” “the missiles that were actually flares,” “the wedding mannequin from nowhere,” the “magical burning Koran,” the “little girl who actually fell off a swing” and “keep filming!” will now enter the pantheon of shame of photojournalism.

A few photo-illusions are probably due to the lust for the most sensational or striking-looking image—that is, more aesthetic bias than political prejudice. Also, many photographers know that war victims are money shots and some will break the rules of the profession to cash in. But true as well is that local stringers and visiting anchors alike seem to have succumbed either to lens-enabled Stockholm syndrome or accepted being the uncredited Hezbollah staff photographer so as to be able to file stories and images in militia-controlled areas.

It does not help that certain news organizations have acted like government officials or corporate officers trying to squash a scandal. The visual historian in me revolts when an ABC producer informs me that Reuters “deleted all 920 images” by the stringer who produced the “Beirut double smoke” image and is “less than willing to talk about it.” Can you say “18-minute gap,” anyone?

Interview with a jihadist preacher

Abu Abdullah.jpg

Watch this CNN video (thanks to F.) of an interview with a jihadist cleric, a convert to Islam, in Britain. Note that the voiceovers, without presenting any evidence, tell us that his views would be repugnant to the vast majority of Muslims, and say that he "tries" to justify violence by invoking the Qur'an -- with the clear implication, again without any evidence, that the Qur'an doesn't actually teach what Abu Abdullah says it teaches. Whoever put this video together is dogmatically convinced that Islam is a religion of peace, and no amount of evidence to the contrary is going to change his mind.

Why does this matter? Because it's false. And false analysis cannot lead to correct policy. The West's misapprehensions about Islam have led it to a number of blunders already. No doubt there will be many more.

Anyway, note also Abu Abdullah's complete identification with Muslims as "my people," despite his so obvious Englishness. His Islam has entirely effaced his ties to his family, his country, and his heritage.

You need to read all of this:
Toronto Terror Suspects Were ClearGuidance Kids

In the early days of Little Green Footballs, following the 9/11 attacks, we discovered an incredibly vile Islamic discussion forum known as ClearGuidance, self-described as “a resource guide for Muslim American teenagers,” where Muslim kids traded decapitation videos and jihad talk.

Today the Globe and Mail reports that at least two of the suspects accused of plotting massive terror attacks in Canada were regular posters on ClearGuidance.com.

HOUSTON and TORONTO — Fahim Ahmad needed a fix — and he knew exactly where to get it.

It was January 15, 2003 — three years before he became the first man accused of leading an al-Qaeda-inspired terrorism plot on Canadian soil. Mr. Ahmad had begun turning to his computer for religious gratification. His destination was the same place thousands of young Muslims across North America and Britain went for advice on being a good Muslim.

He went to ClearGuidance.com, an Islamic website and forum that became a destination for thousands of teenagers between 2001 and 2004. It was there they asked questions of both minor consequence — Should U.S. Muslims say the pledge of allegiance in public schools? — and serious consequence — Is it permissible to attack innocent civilians in the name of Allah?

In less than a year after ClearGuidance’s inception in 2001, it expanded to nearly 2,700 members. As it grew more popular, it grew out of control and, The Globe and Mail has learned, sparked numerous inquiries from Western intelligence agencies, including the Canadian Security Intelligence Service.

CSIS first took an interest in Mr. Ahmad and Zakaria Amara — the two alleged leaders of the 17 Toronto-area men arrested in June — because of their posts on ClearGuidance.

In the weeks after the June raids, many friends of the suspects — as well as those who prayed alongside them in their Mississauga and Scarborough mosques — wondered what it was that pushed the group of mostly young men and teenagers to such extreme opinions. For the most part their parents, including Mr. Ahmad’s mother and father, weren’t religious.

A Globe and Mail investigation has revealed that at least part of the answer lies with ClearGuidance and its creator — a 23-year-old man who lives in the heart of Republican America: Houston, Texas. The son of Pakistani immigrants, Sarfaraz Jamal’s penchant for programming and vision of Islam allowed everyone to throw in their own two cents, no matter how peaceful or angry.

This is one message posted on ClearGuidance, to give you an idea of what was taking place there in August 2002, as “jihadi” Ibn Musa lovingly relates how he’d slaughter an infidel:

EA..oKay..and hey....when u DO i.then DO it soo badly that he spits out blood and and starts crying really badly...stab him till da muslim blood from his abdomen comes out ...and ....ermmmm....lets make this more freaky....hey CUT his head off .... i mean like not FAST....i mean cut it in a SLOW MOTION....and let him shout ...cry....and do anything he wants lol......then leave him alone...on the floor....let the blood come out from his THROAT...+ ABDOMEN....and yea yea yea...lol.... and wait till he dies okay....when he dies....then give him a KICK and tell him that it was from IBN MUSA lol...hey we dont want kumo sis or anyone to faint while lukin at theyr own thread rite?...so ST OP it here man..lets do this in DA BRO AREA .....

And this was the first “Announcement” from the administrator of ClearGuidance, Sarfaraz Jamal:

We need youth to fight in the way of ALLAH in Kashmir, India, Chechniyah, Afghanistan, Philistine, and wherever we are being oppressed. Leave your plans of al wahn and adopt a new plan which will help the ummah, do not be selfish, this life is cheap, whereas the life of islam, will grant you your desires in this life and the next life.

Islam, a religion of peace? Video Gallery

I'm following Michelle Malkin's lead on "First, they came for..." which is a short video clip on the atrocities of Islamic extremist hate and control. Below I have a list of video links regarding Islam, Muslims and terrorists.

Submission, Part I - Film Clip from short Submission (2004). This metaphorical look at the harsh realities of the lives of Muslim women in the Netherlands got filmmaker Theo van Gogh assassinated November 2, 2004 for producing this clip. Clip is 3 minutes long. (Or download the complete version here - 15.5MB, 11min 34 seconds).

Muslim community in America - Take a look at the Muslim community in Bloomington, a few weeks after a hate crime and the wave of extremist actions in London. Your average red headed, caucasian American could be a Muslim follower. See how the Muslim community has infiltrated America. There are an estimated 6-8 million Muslims embracing over 300 community organizations and professional organizations in North America according to Islamic Society of North America. 4min and 50 seconds long. RealPlayer required.

Muslims in America shortly after 9/11 and how many fear for their lives. Some take up self defense class. In this clip, one Muslim condemned the 9/11 attack. 21MB, 1 min and 47 seconds.

Jews for Allah. How one Jewish person converted to Islam. Claims that Islam is the one perfect religion for everyone. Hold on to your lunch. 2MB, 7min 48seconds.

Stones for Apostates (WARNING! VERY GRAPHIC!). Stoning to death is a cruel insane Islamic punishment given to people who are married but still voluntarily have sex outside marraige. This punishment was ordered by the "merciful" Prophet, who ofcourse was the messenger of the "merciful" Allah. Many hadith, including Sahih Bukhari give proof that Stoning was ordered and practiced by Muhammed, for example: Volume 2, Book 23, Number 413: Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Umar : The Jew brought to the Prophet a man and a woman from amongst them who have committed (adultery) illegal sexual intercourse. He ordered both of them to be stoned (to death), near the place of offering the funeral prayers beside the mosque." 2.2MB - 15 minutes, 30 seconds

Remember the London and Madrid attack. 1min and 32sec

Remember 9/11. Videos...take your pick.

Alt.Muslim "reviews" Islam: What the West Needs to Know

When I wrote my book Islam Unveiled in 2001, I hoped that thoughtful Muslims would address the points I raised in it, and that we could open up a dialogue that might be useful in illuminating what could be done about the elements of Islam that give rise to fanaticism and violence. In that I was naive. The response by critics to that book as well as to every other book that I have written has consisted only of vague assertions that I am ignorant of Islam, without ever providing a single substantive refutation of anything I wrote.

It's the same with this Alt.Muslim review of the documentary in which I appear, Islam: What The West Needs To Know. Reviewer Zahir Janmohamed seems to think that sneering is a good substitute for argumentation. He raises not a single substantive point to attempt to show that what the movie says is wrong. We all know that you're reasonable, and would never do or condone anything bigoted.

I should have added that there have been dozens of reported instances of Muslims trying to make folks nervous since 9/11. Some of them quite famous. I've seen it in Memphis and o'seas, especially Germany. Trying to make our skin crawl.

I truly believe that's what these knuckleheads were up to; thousands are being trained in hatred, mockery, taqqiya, etc. weekly in UK mosques and streets.

They had the same possum-eatin-sh*t grins on the inside as the poster ladies are displaying. Just my opinion.   If you ask me, this is the first shot in the great European Civil War that Fjordman warned us about.

The Daily Mail reports on a flight in Britain that remained on the ground due to the demands of its passengers that two Arabic passengers get ejected. Moment of Truth: ISLAMO-FASCIST TERROR COULD TRIGGER A BRUTAL WESTERN RESPONSE

#523 Sleipnir  8/20/2006 02:30AM PDT

The term "Islamofascism" was introduced by the French writer Maxine Rodinson (1915-2004) to describe the Iranian Revolution of 1978. Rodinson was a Marxist, who described as "fascist" any movement of which he disapproved. But we should be grateful to him for coining a word that enables people on the left to denounce our common enemy. After all, other French leftists--Michel Foucault, for example--had welcomed the revolution as an amusing threat to Western interests. It is only now that people on the left can acknowledge that they are just as much a target as the rest of us, in a war that has global chaos as its goal. ...

War has morphed, indeed, in ways unimaginable fifty years ago.

The Islamic Resistance Movement (IRM), the Jihad, which includes Al Qaeda, Hamas, Hezbollah, and all other like-minded folk, is much smarter about it than we are. It has turned the civility of the US, and Europe, into a weapon and turned it against us.

I'm afriad this is not only Britian's problem but all Free Western nations ....incredibly we have allowed far far to large of Islamic populations from Germany to America and all points in between....and this is only going to grow worse like a cancer unless something is done drastic....

Islam is the fifth column along with L3's in our Free Nations....we have a growing enemy in our midst that has been trying to kill, enslave or convert us forcibly for over 1400 years...

The West has a huge problem!

LONDON, Aug. 20 — From his home on the northwest edge of this city, Muhamad al-Massari runs a Web site that celebrates the violent death of British and American soldiers. It is visited by tens of thousands of people every day, he said.

Mr. Massari maintains the Arabic-language site, tajdeed.org.uk, in the face of a strict new law aimed at curtailing violent speech and publishing. Just last week, the Council of Holy Warriors, a group affiliated with Al Qaeda, posted a declaration on the site praising a suicide bombing in Iraq that killed or wounded 55 people.

“If you kill our civilians, we kill your civilians,” Mr. Massari declared during an interview.

Mr. Massari’s Web site, and his public remarks, appear to violate of the Antiterrorism Act of 2006, which makes it a crime to glorify or encourage political violence. Inciting violence has long been illegal here but the new rules, drawn up after the London subway and bus bombings in July 2005, are intended to be much tougher.

The law’s underlying assumption is that speeches and publications by Britain’s more extreme Islamists may play a role in leading disgruntled young men toward violence. In addition to banning speech that encourages terrorism, the new law also criminalizes reckless speech that may have the same effect.

Yet despite the antiglorification law, and an array of other measures approved since last summer’s bombings, Islamist leaders like Mr. Massari persist, some of them declaring it the duty of British Muslims to kill in the name of Islam.

Some British leaders are beginning to publicly question why such clerics are allowed to continue.

BBC Admits Engaging in Staged Photos

In this Lebanon report, the BBC (probably inadvertently) admits that they stood by and took photographs as Hizballah put a child’s life in danger: Dangers await Lebanon returnees. (Hat tip: USS Neverdock.)

When Um Ali Mihdi returned to her home in the southern Lebanese city of Bint Jbeil two days ago, she found a 1,000lb (450kg) Israeli bomb lying unexploded in her living room.

The shell is huge, bigger than the young boy pushed forward to stand reluctantly next to it while we get our cameras out and record the scene for posterity.

Video: I, A Muslim

The controversial Czech TV documentary “I, A Muslim,” in which a reporter used a hidden camera to record inside mosques, has been posted (with English subtitles) at Google Video by LGF reader “Abu Kafir:” I, a Muslim.

Wrzesnewskyj And Nash - "Death To Jews"

Military historian Victor Davis Hanson has a sobering review of the current situation in the ME and the questionable sympathies of the world press;

The old Arab agenda of recapturing “stolen” land has been superseded by a new Islamist jihad that is as fanatical as it is inhuman. The Islamists care not a whit for ground, but only for the abject destruction of the Jewish state and to finish the Holocaust that they claim did not take place. Few of the pundits now clamoring for “engagement” care to recall that Syria probably murdered Rafik Hariri, or that Iran promises to wipe Israel off the map.

The near criminal indifference of the international community is cause for greater depression still. No one says a thing about horrific Arab racism and anti-Semitism that brazenly offer the world pictures of our secretary of State as a primate and constant hate speech of Jews as apes and pigs. And here at home, a celebrity actor, the staff of a failed congresswoman in Georgia, and a crazed Muslim with a gun in Seattle all shout about the evils of the “Jews” — a good cross-section of just how insidious is the growing anti-Semitism.

The globalized media is absolutely discredited after the coverage of Lebanon. Reuters has destroyed its reputation, gained from 150 years of world reporting, by releasing doctored pictures and tolerating staged photo-ops. Almost all the Western media outlets failed to distinguish Lebanese civilian from military casualties — as if the Hezbollah terrorists they never filmed and never interviewed never died.

Indeed, thanks to the unprofessional reporters abroad, and their disingenuous chiefs back home, the world never saw the killers who sent the rockets nor many of their civilian victims on the ground in Israel. Nor did the reporters apprise their audience of the different landscapes in which they worked: candor in Israel might win loud disagreement; truth in Lebanon meant death. It would be as if Reuters, AP, or the New York Times embedded its reporters within the Waffen SS, beaming daily reports back home about the great morale and noble suffering of the Wehrmacht as it advanced into the snowy Ardenn.

... and near the end gets something wrong;
In an amorphous war of self-induced Western restraint, like the present one, truth and moral clarity are as important as military force. This past month, the world of the fascist jihadist and those who tolerate him was once again on display for civilization to fathom. Even the most timid and prone to appeasement in the West are beginning to see that it is becoming a question of “the Islamists or us.”

In this eleventh hour, that is a sort of progress after all.

Or rather, is proven wrong. Returning from Lebanon after spending a few days as guests of Hezbollah, two Canadian politicians have established themselves as this year's leading contenders for the Nobel Prize In Bad Judgement,
It would aid the cause of peace if Canada dropped Hezbollah from a list of banned terrorist organizations, according to two Canadian MPs on a fact-finding mission to Lebanon.

When asked if he were in favour of Hezbollah being taken off the terror list, Etobicoke Liberal Borys Wrzesnewskyj said: "Yes, I would be."

He likened the situation in the Middle East to Northern Ireland, where "if there wasn't the possibility for London to negotiate with the IRA, you'd still have bombings."

"Hezbollah has a political wing, they have members of parliament, they have two cabinet ministers," Wrzesnewskyj said. "You want to encourage politicians in this military organization so that the centre of gravity shifts to them."

New Democrat Peggy Nash, who represents the Toronto riding of Parkdale-High Park, said her discussions in Lebanon had led her to believe "that it is just not helpful to label them a terrorist organization."

"If the political parties in Lebanon who may disagree with Hezbollah, and be opposed to them and their philosophy, can figure out a way to work with Hezbollah and try to get along internally, then perhaps we should take a cue from that."

This was the message that both MPs said they would bring back to their caucuses, and eventually to the House of Commons, when they return to Canada this week.

Unbelievable.

CAIR wants YOU to write to C-Span!

Jihad Watch reader (and first-class link referrer) Twostellas has informed me that there is a CAIR Action Alert against me:

Action: Islam-Basher to Appear on C-SPAN

ISLAM-BASHER TO APPEAR ON C-SPAN

ACTION ALERT: Robert Spencer, the publisher of "Jihad Watch," will appear Sunday, August 20, on a PRE-TAPED C-SPAN "Q&A" segment.

In his book "Guide for Catholics," http://watchjihadwatch.blogspot.com/2006/05/bias.html

"Islam itself is an incomplete, misleading, and often downright false revelation which, in many ways, directly contradicts what God has revealed through the prophets of the Old Testament and through his Son Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh.. . .For several reasons. . .Islam constitutes a threat to the world at large.

The subtitle of Spencer's forthcoming book claims Islam is "the World's Most Intolerant Religion."

Please watch the program and then contact C-SPAN to express your concerns about the network's decision to provide air-time to someone whose website promotes bigotry and hatred.

A few observations:

1. CAIR's source for this is Watching Jihad Watch, a site whose anonymous operator has thoroughly discredited himself to any fair-minded observer by lying many times, in quite obvious fashon, about my positions and my work, and who is so inveterately dishonest that he has even lied about revealing his own name. Details here (scroll down). (Addendum: His lies continue. A reader just emailed to tell me that his latest post, from August 20, excoriates me for not pointing out that Muslim tipsters helped expose the British airline plot. Oops: I pointed that out on August 17.)

2. The "Action Alert" quotes a book that I cowrote several years ago, ignoring the two bestsellers that I wrote on my own. This is fair enough, as I certainly do not disavow Inside Islam: A Guide for Catholics, but I do think it's interesting that they can't find anything they can use in A) books I am fully responsible for, with no coauthor; and B) books that sold ten or twenty or 100 times more copies than Inside Islam.

Note also the substance of their scare quote. It is, in sum, an affirmation of Christian belief and of non-belief in Islam. If CAIR succeeds in presenting that as "bigotry" or "Islam bashing," they will have essentially ruled out of polite society and the public discourse any affirmation of a religious faith other than Islam and concomitant rejection of Islam. Obviously Islam does contradict the Old and New Testaments, or it would not be a religion separate from Christianity and Judaism. One might only find the pointing out of this offensive if one subscribes to the supremacist Muslim view that the original Jewish and Christian Scriptures were Islamic texts, and that the present versions of them are corruptions of those Islamic texts. In other words, CAIR is trying to impose the Islamic perspective on the rest of us under the guise of cries of "bigotry." This is a matter of freedom of speech, freedom of conscience, and more.

Let me repeat that: CAIR is condemning as "bigotry" a simple affirmation of Christian faith.

They also include part of a quote in which Daniel Ali and I say Islam constitutes a "threat." But this should be obvious also. Even if the jihadists do twist and hijack Islam as CAIR claims publicly, they arise from within Islam. And CAIR has done little or nothing effective to counter this threat among Muslims.

3. It's ironic that CAIR would take umbrage at the subtitle of my forthcoming book, The Truth About Muhammad: Founder of the World's Most Intolerant Religion, in the context of trying to silence me and scold C-Span for giving me airtime. How tolerant!

4. This website does not promote bigotry and hatred. This website tells the truth about how Islamic jihadists promote bigotry and hatred, as well as violence against non-Muslims. I challenge CAIR -- Nihad Awad, Ibrahim Hooper, Hussam Ayloush, anyone -- to produce even a single statement that I (not unmoderated commenters, since Muslims as well as non-Muslims, and jihad supporters as well as anti-jihadists post here) have written that says something false about Islam. I also would be happy to debate anyone. Nihad, Ibrahim, Hussam, you can contact me at director@jihadwatch.org.

5. CAIR exhorts its minions to contact C-Span at the email link above. I don't usually do this, but I think in the name of freedom of speech that it is worth asking you to write to C-Span also, at viewer@c-span.org. Tell them what you think of the interview with me last night. Tell them whether or not you think I promoted bigotry and hatred, or said anything false at all.

You might also wish to tell them about CAIR. CAIR recently dropped a suit contesting these propositions -- evidently they could not disprove them:

· “Let their [sic] be no doubt that CAIR is a terrorist supporting front organization that is partially funded by terrorists, and that CAIR wishes nothing more than the implementation of Sharia law in America.”

· CAIR is an “organization founded by Hamas supporters which seeks to overthrow Constitutional government in the United States and replace it with an Islamist theocracy using our own Constitution as protection.”

· “ACAIR reminds our readers that CAIR was started by Hamas members and is supported by terrorist supporting individuals, groups and countries.”

· “Why oppose CAIR? CAIR has proven links to, and was founded by, Islamic terrorists. CAIR is not in the United States to promote the civil rights of Muslims. CAIR is here to make radical Islam the dominant religion in the United States and convert our country into an Islamic theocracy along the lines of Iran. In addition, CAIR has managed, through the adroit manipulation of the popular media, to present itself as the ‘moderate’ face of Islam in the United States. CAIR succeeded to the point that the majority of its members are not aware that CAIR actively supports terrorists and terrorist supporting groups and nations. In addition, CAIR receives direct funding from Islamic terrorists supporting countries.”

· “CAIR is a fundamentalist organization dedicated to the overthrow of the United States Constitution and the installation of an Islamic theocracy in America.”

CAIR is with this Action Alert again behaving like a schoolyard bully, a thug engaging in intimidation tactics. I challenge CAIR to drop the attempt to bully C-Span and silence me -- which they are trying to without demonstrating that anything I have said is false or damaging in any way -- and to meet me instead in an honest and open debate. Write to C-Span and let them know what you think.

CAIR Smears Jihad Watch

The Council on American Islamic Relations is whining, seething, and doing one of their trademark “Action Alert” smear jobs (intended to provoke their members into harassing and muzzling their critics), in response to Robert Spencer’s appearance last night on C-SPAN: CAIR wants YOU to write to C-Span!

UPDATE at 8/21/06 9:44:55 am:

To counter this predictable smear campaign, you can send an email to C-SPAN and thank them for the show at viewer@c-span.org.
